The Appeal
The Maserati 50/T2/SS Super Sport, affectionately known as the "Rospo" (the Toad), is one of the most notable two-wheeled collectibles to bear the famous trident badge. Produced by FCAM, the Orsi family's sister company to the legendary car marque, the T2/SS was the aggressive, top-specification sports variant in the 50cc range. Styled to mimic the grand GP racing motorcycles of the era, it was designed to capture the imagination of Italian youth restricted by law to sub-50cc machines. Its nickname originated at a Bologna dealership, where owner Lina Borri, upon seeing the distinctive backbone frame for the first time, exclaimed "Ma cos'è questo brutto rospo?", or "What is this ugly toad?". The name stuck, and today it is a badge of honour among collectors.
With its signature blue and white livery over a silver frame, race number carriers, wrap-around front mudguard, and that theatrical dummy megaphone exhaust, the T2/SS cuts a purposeful figure for a 49cc bike. Production was cut short when the Orsi Group suffered financial collapse around 1960, and the small numbers built, combined with the passage of over six decades, mean surviving examples are very scarce. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most characterful pieces of Italian moped history.
