1950 Triumph Speed Twin 500

Highlights

  • The vendor informs us that this bike was restored by British motorcycle specialists Giuseppe Pettinari through Brooklands SRL of Muggiò in the province of Milan
  • Presented in fantastic mechanical and cosmetic condition
  • A highly regarded and desirable classic British bike

The Appeal

Hailed as the motorcycle that helped Triumph back onto its feet following the Second World War, the Speed Twin built upon the success of the company's pioneering pre-war 5T models. These were the first British bikes to successfully incorporate the parallel-twin design and the post-war Speed Twin added modern telescopic front forks and a few cosmetic alterations to bring it up to date.
Here we have a charming 1950 example, previously restored by specialists shortly after the vendor acquired it in 2010. Since then, it has participated in numerous bike events and short trips around the Euganean hills. Presented in fine order both mechanical and cosmetically, this looks to be an exceptional example of a capable and elegant classic British bike.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the present owner in 2010
  • The vendor informs us that this bike was restored by British motorcycle specialists Giuseppe Pettinari through Brooklands SRL of Muggiò in the province of Milan
  • It would appear that the odometer was reset during the restoration as the vendor tells us they’ve covered around 5,000 kilometres since the restoration was completed
  • Apparently stored in a heated garage when not in use
  • We’re informed that the bike is regularly cleaned and maintained by the vendor as well as the Pettinari workshop
  • Registered with the Italian Motorcycle Federation since 2010 and the vendor reportedly has all the correct documentation

The Condition

  • Cosmetically restored in 2010
  • Still in excellent overall condition, with a few marks from use
  • Rakish styling
The Speed Twin is an immensely pretty bike, with sleek lines that convey a sense of great speed. The rider sits low, allowing them to hunker down over the tank if desired.
The paintwork has held up remarkably well, with just a few slight cracks on the rear mudguard. Elsewhere, the paint looks really smart, exhibiting a lustrous shine and no damage beyond the odd minute mark and chip. The vendor points out that there are some scratches on the rear stand, which are to be expected on a motorcycle that’s actually used.
The frame appears to be straight and corrosion free, as do the handlebars. We didn’t detect any dents to the tank or any noticeable pitting to the brightwork. There’s some slight wear to some of the rubber components but nothing excessive and we note the seats upholstery is in great condition. All the instrumentation presents clearly and we understand that everything works as it should. The vendor informs us that the wheels and tyres are both in great condition as well.

The Mechanics

  • 498 cc parallel twin
  • Mechanically restored in 2010
  • Since carefully run in by the vendor and used sparingly
The vendor reports that this Triumph’s mechanicals were completely restored back in 2010 and they have since been careful to run it in correctly and reportedly carry out all the prescribed servicing.
As a result, it is said to run and ride impeccably, with ample performance for modern traffic. We’re informed that it starts readily, runs smoothly and is actually very easy to operate. The engine and gearbox casings look to be in great shape and we understand that all the controls operate exactly as Triumph originally intended.
Having covered around 5,000 kilometres since the rebuild, it is now nicely run in and ready for the next owner to continue enjoying out on the road.

Summary

This looks like a really well sorted example of a celebrated British motorcycle. If you want a very presentable classic Triumph that you can use to its full potential, we strongly recommend considering this 1950 Speed Twin.
