1951 Vauxhall L-Type Velox

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Rare top spec L-Type
  • 2.3-litre straight six
  • Original RHD car
  • Has been in Netherlands since 1955

THE APPEAL

The L-Series Vauxhalls were introduced in 1948, either in Wyvern (1442cc) or Velox (2275cc) variants, replacing the pre-war designed 10, 12 and 14 models that had been put back into production after the war.

They were a major step forward for the Luton (UK)-based manufacturer, its first all-new post-war car and the key to its export success.

The L-Series was also a leap forward in terms of styling, featuring headlamps incorporated into the front wings to give a much more modern, American-inspired appearance. Front suspension was independent, and the three-speed gearbox was operated via a column mounted lever.

This one is the best specification – a straight-six Velox – which was originally supplied in the UK but was exported to the Netherlands in 1955, when it was just four years old.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Currently based in the Netherlands
  • Dutch registration document
  • Original linen-backed Netherlands registration papers
  • Workshop manual

Originally supplied in the UK, the Velox has been in the Netherlands since 1955 and has an old-style cloth logbook, documenting two ownership changes. The first Dutch owner kept it for 30 years and sold it in 1985. The next owner had it for 33 years, and it changed keeper again in 2018. To have kept it as long as they did, those first two owners must have treasured it.

Also supplied with the car is a Vauxhall official workshop manual.

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed carpets and door cards
  • Original tan leather seats
  • Bakelite steering wheel
  • Gentle patina

There’s a charming and gentle patina to the car, which still has its original dark tan leather seats. They have some signs of wear and some very minor damage, but are overall still in decent order suggesting that the car’s recorded mileage may well be correct.

The carpets and door trims have been retrimmed to a high standard and the glorious Bakelite steering wheel is in good condition.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Restored condition
  • Good paintwork
  • Well-preserved chrome and trim
  • New Vredestein tyres

This is a car that has been maintained and cared for all of its life and at some point it has seen some body restoration, as is proven by the exceptional quality of its gleaming black paintwork.

Most of the chrome and trim is original and wears a gentle patina, with some minor blemishes but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance of what is an extremely smart and well-presented car.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2.3 straight-six
  • “Three-on-the-tree” gearbox
  • Well-maintained
  • Starts and runs well

Vauxhall’s ‘Big Six’ is a well-regarded engine renowned for its ability to run for large mileages. This one has always been well-maintained with the most recent long-term owner taking care of servicing and repairs himself.

The vendor reports that it drives very well indeed with no known faults, and that it will happily run all day at comfortable cruising speeds – indeed, compared to many cars of its era it is relatively fast, comfortable and refined.

The three-speed column-shift gearbox works as it should, as do the brakes, suspension and steering.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
