The Appeal

By 1954, Morgan had refined the front end of the Plus 4, introducing a curved stone guard that replaced the short-lived 'Interim Cowl' design. With the factory reportedly producing only 19 cars with the transitional bodywork, survivors are exceptionally scarce.
Chassis 426 AMX left the Malvern factory on February 17, 1954, and was registered two days later. It returned to the works regularly into the mid-1960s and went on to be fiercely campaigned by the late motoring journalist Pat Kennett, who famously won the 1963 El Gran Premio Nacional de Panama in a Morgan. The car features in several key publications on the marque, including Morgan 100 Years by Charles Morgan and Gregory Houston Bowden, and Ken Hill's defining work.
Under its current owner, who acquired the car in 2013, it has been sprinted and hill-climbed with the VSCC, competed at Chateau Impney Revival, rallied to France, and appeared at Goodwood Revival as a 'cameo car'. In former ownerships, it earned considerable success as a trials car, including the 2006 Morgan Sports Car Club Ruth Atkinson Trophy. Now fitted with a competition-tuned TR4 engine in place of its original Standard Vanguard unit, the car was recently recommissioned after a period of inactivity predating the pandemic and is reported to run well, though it will benefit from a thorough check over before regular use. The original engine is available to the successful purchaser by separate negotiation.
Well-documented and historically important, this Plus Four is bound to attract well-deserved attention at auction.
