The Appeal

Originally produced for the British Army for the WW2 war effort, the Matchless G3/L is a rather historically significant motorbike in numerous ways. Not only was it one of the most popular war-time motorbikes ever produced, but the G3/L was also the first bike to incorporate telescopic oil-dampened forks.
Following the war, the bike retained its popularity, partially due to its impressive off-road capabilities and rugged build design. As a result, the G3/L was a common choice for trials riders, with many opting to take to green laning, like this particular example.
With dozens of new parts installed, this is a rather capable historic vehicle, no doubt perfect for enjoyable adventures in the countryside. If you’re looking for an interesting machine to explore the outdoors with, this is the one for you.

The History and Paperwork

  • Restored example
  • Rebuilt 1956 engine
  • 6 previous owners
  • Just 2,616 miles covered since being restored
  • V5C document is present
  • Previously used in France by the current owner
Prior to making its way to the current owner in 2010, this Matchless G3/LS was in a rather tired state and in need of some love. The current owner rose to the challenge and has totally rebuilt the bike, with over £2600 spent on new parts. The bike has also been resprayed, and now looks absolutely stunning, ready for the new owner to look upon with pride.
As the included V5C document shows, the bike has indeed spent time abroad with the current owner, enjoying the French sunshine. Also included within the vehicle's paperwork are invoices detailing dozens of new components, as required throughout the restoration process.

The Exterior

  • Resprayed exterior
  • New alloy rims with stainless steel spokes
  • New alloy mudguards
  • Professionally painted tinware
  • New chrome trim pieces
  • Excellent condition
  • Fitted with side stand, centre stand will be supplied with bike
As the vehicle has been restored with no expense spared, it should come as no surprise this Matchless now presents itself beautifully, with a slick new paint job. The bike also features new trim pieces, new chrome, new mudguards, new wheels, painted tinware, and much more.
As the bike has hardly covered any miles since its restoration, buyers can expect an excellent finish all around, with very few signs of use or age.

The Mechanics

  • Rebuilt 1956 engine
  • Superb mechanical condition
  • Rebuilt forks with new tubes
  • Rebuilt Jam Pots
  • Rebuilt dynamo
  • New exhaust system
  • Well maintained example
  • Performs beautifully
  • Fitted with DVR2 Solid State Rectifier
Once again, buyers can expect to reap the benefits of an extensive restoration, courtesy of the current owner. The bike now features a completely rebuilt 1956 engine, which happily fires up and performs without fault. This Matchless is also fitted with a new exhaust system, which lets the 350cc lump sing a tasteful tune throughout the rev range.
With far too many new mechanical components to list, buyers can truly expect a superb motorcycle, that no doubt performs even greater than it originally did back in 1995. The only “fault” to note, is a broken headlight dip switch, which still functions as required.
As the bike has been rebuilt with green laning in mind, this G3/LS expands upon the original off-road capability and will happily handle the country tracks.

Summary

This rebuilt Matchless G3/LS is in fantastic condition, benefiting from dozens of new parts and complete restoration. The bike has been rebuilt as a green laner, and will no doubt perform admirably out on the muddy tracks.

If you’re looking for a characterful weekend toy to explore the countryside with, this historical Matchless should be at the very top of your list

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
