1958 Ford Zodiac Mk.2

Highlights

  • Beautiful looking classic
  • Great for vintage road trips
  • Ready for the next owner

The Appeal

With its wonderful two-tone paint, white wall tyres, and chrome elements you know that the Ford Zodiac Mk.2 was a very luxurious car back in 1958.

It would share the underpinnings of its little brother the Zephyr but wrapped in a more stylish body this is the one that you want to add to your collection.

It requires a small amount of TLC to bring it up to show winning condition, but once you have completed these works it’ll be a wonderful car for you.

The History and Paperwork

  • Rolling off the Essex production line in November of 1958 this Zodiac has gone on to live a great life
  • Split between its 6 previous owners it has performed as expected
  • Unfortunately, we cannot be too specific about the car's past as it doesn’t have much of a paper trail
  • We do know that the car was bought into the current ownership in 2006
  • Since then it has been used on very special occasions
  • When not in use it has been stored within a dry barn
  • Within the paperwork, we find a modern and up to date V5, and an old MOT certificate dated 2005
  • This is really the only paperwork that will come with the car
  • It is now your chance to add to the car's history, take it out, take it to shows, and just enjoy the thrills of classic car ownership
  • With a bit of TLC, this Zodiac will become a show winning car that will do you proud wherever you display it.

The Interior

  • The seats are in very good condition
  • The carpets look new
  • Very presentable
The Zodiac was known for its two-tone paint job on the exterior, what is even better is that these blue and white two-tone theme carriers on inside this example. This synergy between outside and inside provides a wonderful place to sit back and enjoy the miles roll on by.

Luckily, the condition of the interior is pretty good, there are a few areas that need some attention, but these do not detract from the overall condition.

If we start by looking at the seat condition, we can see that the front and rear benches look very good indeed. The material itself does not have any nasty rips or tears, but there is what appears to be very small spots of white paint on the rear bench. Hopefully, this should come off with some elbow grease. The dark blue theme of the seats is matched with the dark blue carpets throughout, but with the white accents on the seats, door cards, dash, and headlining it still feels nice and light.

Focusing on the door cards we can see that they could do with a little clean but are in overall good condition. The eagled eyed of you may spot that a few door handles are missing, but these appear to have been stored in the boot.

As you’d expect with a car of this age there are a few areas of the interior that aren’t like how it left the factory in 1958. The panel surrounding the radio has unclipped itself, and the speedometer surround is slightly loose as well.

Another area that you will probably have to look at is the door rubbers. In places, the glue has failed, and they droop slightly making it difficult to close the door properly. This should hopefully be a quick and simple fix.

With a little bit of love, this interior will hold the key to unlocking many happy memories in the future. You can bundle all of your friends and family in with space for their luggage in the large boot and take this on some wonderful destinations.

The Exterior

  • Stunning two-tone paint job
  • Lots of chrome
  • Wonderful American style subtle fins
The Zodiac is all about the exterior looks, it was important for Ford to distinguish this as their executive saloon in the ‘50s. there is no better way to do this than borrowing some styling ques from our friends across the pond. With its two-tone paint, chrome trim, and subtle rear fins the Zodiac is like a small piece of Americana.

This Zodiac is presented in very nice condition considering its age. There are a few areas where the paint is probably not up to Concours condition, but then again if it was would you ever take it out anywhere? The main areas of paint bubbling are just above the gutters that run around the roof.

Much like the paint, the chrome elements are also presented well but there are a few areas that need a little bit of work. The rear bumper is the main area that needs a bit of work, there is some slight pitting, and the chrome is a little dull. In contrast to rear bumpers, the frontal chrome areas are presented very well, some slight pitting is present, but they are a lot shinier than their rear counterparts.

What you are getting here is a great-looking classic car that will look great sitting within your collection and when you wish to take it out and about this car should always garner a few admiring looks.

The Mechanics

  • 2.5l inline-six fitted
  • Manual column shift
  • Runs, drives, and stops
When Ford launched the Mk.2 Zodiac, they borrowed the running gear from the newly updated Zephyr Six. With the larger 2.5l inline six fitted the Zodiac was capable of some impressive figures back in the day.

Today this Zodiac starts with a turn of the key and idles okay when it is warm, it could probably do with a proper tune-up on a rolling road, but the important thing is that it does start and drive. On the days the photos were taken it drove to the location with only one or two splutters but once it had warmed up properly it slipped into first and reverse with no major complaints.

When you get this Zodiac balanced professionally it will roar down the road at some rate of knots. Classic cars are always fun to drive, you end up bonding with them which allows for a driving experience that no modern car can compare to. This Zodiac should be a hoot to drive when you get it all sorted out.

Summary

This is one of those cars that rarely come up for sale, the Zodiac offers great looks, a comfortable interior, and capable performance. Don’t miss out on an amazing opportunity to get behind the wheel of a car that should provide you with so many wonderful experiences in the future.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
