1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud 1

Highlights

  • Part of an all Silver Cloud Wedding Fleet
  • Documented 69,000 miles
  • Well maintained and reliable

The Appeal

Purchased by the seller in 2014 this lovely Rolls Royce has spent the past seven years as part of his fleet of identical Silver Clouds used for dozens of weddings each year all over the South of England.

He has decided to retire from the wedding hire business and is slowly reducing the fleet. As each Silver Cloud fulfils its final booking it is being offered for sale.
The Clouds are all in good running condition and are most importantly reliable.

This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire an impressive set of matching Rolls Royces that are always in high demand. This is a well maintained and reliable example with superb bodywork and chrome.

The Interior

  • Comfortable and well used
  • Lightly worn Walnut woodwork
  • Patinated grey leather
The inside of the Rolls is in generally good condition with a few issues that could be addressed if desired.

The Walnut dash, door cappings and fold out tables are all in nice condition with just light wear to the varnish in places. The dash itself is lightly worn with small chips and scratches here and there, but all the instrumentation is correct. The large 3 spoke steering wheel is intact with no cracks.

The grey leather seats appear to have undergone a colour change at some stage, and although they look acceptable from a distance there are areas where the original blue colour is starting to reappear.

The leather itself is well patinated with creasing throughout and it should be noted that there are a couple of splits. One is along a seam on the base of the driver’s seat, and the other is on the rear seat backrest at shoulder height. Apart from these two areas of damage we think the leather would respond well to a good “feed” which would reduce the likelihood of further splits.

The dark blue carpets have faded in places, and there is an area in front of the driver where a section has been replaced. The roof lining is clean and intact.
The boot area has black carpet and contains everything that a driver might require when performing wedding duties!

There is a jack and tools stowed beneath the boot floor and a spare wheel with lightly worn BF Goodridge tyre. The boot area appears dry and there is just minor oxidation in the lowest areas along the seam lines.

Generally the interior has a nice feel and is useable as is, but some time spent improving the leather and perhaps investing in new carpets would improve the appearance.

The Exterior

  • Outstanding paint
  • Excellent chrome and trim
  • Consistent panel lines and fit

The exterior of the Cloud is in excellent condition, no mean feat considering the size of the body and the age of the car.

We subjected it to close inspection and were impressed by the consistent panel gaps and the overall condition of the paintwork. There is no bubbling or blistering, or any scrapes or areas of damage.  All four doors open and close perfectly with no droop.

The chrome work is equally as well presented, with no pitting or dents. The important grill is undented and intact with straight vanes and smart Spirit of Ecstasy.

The grill is flanked by a pair of bumper mounted Lucas driving lamps with good chrome and no damage to the glass. We noted that the wing mounted passenger side mirror appears to be missing. The rear light lenses look to be original to the car and have faded with some age cracking to the plastic.

All four wheels have full size Rolls Royce hubcaps, three of which have a pinstripe painted in the white band, the fourth seems to have been changed at some stage. The thin white band tyres are all lightly worn, with 3 General brand and one Hercules Touring Radial.

Overall the exterior is in superb condition given the age of the car, but this may also be a reflection of the relatively low mileage. It has averaged just over 1,000 miles a year for 63 years!

The Mechanics

  • Used regularly for Wedding duties
  • Reliable and delightful to drive
  • Regularly serviced by in house mechanic

The Cloud had been used for a wedding a couple of days prior to our visit and it performed faultlessly- an important consideration as it wouldn’t be tolerated if it “failed to proceed”!

The seller tells us that this Cloud drives particularly well, and is the wedding driver’s first choice from the fleet.

Mechanically it is in good original condition and a look at the underside reveals a solid chassis and floors, with very little oxidation and only a minor oil leak.

Summary

So many of this era of Rolls Royce suffer from poor repairs and workmanship which, on a body as large as this, is obvious and expensive to put right.

This example is straight as an arrow with excellent paint and chrome.

You might choose to invest a little time and expense on the interior but basically it’s ready to go straight to work.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
