The Appeal
Born from Carrozzeria Bertone's brilliant BAT design studies of the mid-1950s, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale is one of the most aerodynamically striking shapes ever to emerge from an Italian coachbuilder, and is still more than capable of raising eyebrows in a big, big way.
With a drag coefficient of just 0.29, the SS was conceived with competition in mind, and its 1,300cc all-alloy four-cylinder engine - producing 116 hp through twin Weber side-draught carburettors - could propel the slippery coupé to nearly 125 mph. With no more than 1,366 examples produced across both Giulietta and Giulia variants, these cars are rare and highly coveted.
This particular Sprint Speciale, chassis AR10120 00215, was delivered new to Italy and has a documented ownership history stretching back to 1967. Converted to competition specification in the early 2000s, it has since been extensively campaigned at some of Europe's most storied circuits, with its racing career chronicled in its CSAI Passport. The car was awarded both FIA and CSAI Historic Technical Passports, with the FIA HTP having been issued in the UK by the MSA. Notably, it retains a host of original components, including a factory-replacement block, SS/SZ engine head, Weber carburettors, double oil sump, and four exhaust manifolds, a reassuring level of authenticity for a car with such an active competition history.
This Sprint Speciale is well-suited to continued vintage racing. Equally, it comes with its original cancelled Italian Libretto and can be re-registered for road use. For those seeking entry to some of the finest historic racing events in Europe, or simply wishing to own one of Alfa Romeo's most distinctive and undeniably striking cars, this is a highly desirable opportunity. Slicked back, striking and loaded with personality, it's little wonder this pocket rocket draws a lot of admiring glances. Everything here is a draw, from the rich red paintwork to the distinctive 'smily' front and sleek fastback sculpting.
With only gentle patina settling into the paint from the car's storied history - largely around the headlights and doorjams - it's otherwise still a brightly presented, shining car with familiar racing accoutrements and accents.
The stripped-back interior is as you'd expect, with OMP sports seats, a somewhat timeworn Alfa Romeo steering wheel, and a simple dash layout with additional instruments protruding from what was the radio mount. DSC_1615.jpg160.59 KB
