The Appeal
Designed and built by Carrozzieri Touring Superleggera, the Alfa Romeo 102 series 200 Spider was produced in limited numbers between 1957 and 1961. Despite ‘Supperleggera’ still forming part of the company name, that’s not the construction technique applied here and it was the first steel monocoque from Touring, fashioned into an attractive and distinctive design.
This example was first registered in the Netherlands but was later imported to Italy by a collector. At some stage it has had a full restoration covering the interior, exterior and mechanics which has been carried out to the highest standard.
Proof of its standing in the collector community came in 2016 when it was exhibited on the Touring stand at Automotoretrò in Turin. The Interior

What better way to live la dolce vita than to venture out in the sun, top down, behind the wheel of this Spider? The interior has been fully retrimmed and is in excellent condition, with the seats showing no real signs of use. The mats have been replaced and are in very good condition, while the dashboard also presents very well and has had the switches labelled for ease of use.
All the dials, buttons and switches work, too. The only downside is that the period radio is not connected but there is a neatly installed power socket beneath the dashboard which could be used to run a suitable alternative. The power feed could also be used to reconnect the radio and the replacement of the (readily available) aerial may also bring the radio back to life.
The boot is neat and tidy and the rubber flooring with the Alfa Romeo logo embossed is original, if showing some splits due to age. The battery has a connector to keep it charged and the original starting handle is present for emergencies. In all, it looks great and is very usable.
The Exterior

Touring’s take on the Spider is an attractive design with many distinctive details that mark it out as something special. Again, it’s all in lovely condition with excellent chrome and the only real blemish is a tiny mark behind the driver’s side front headlight.
The hood has been renewed at some stage and remains pristine, with an undamaged and clear rear window. The wheels are in excellent order and wear a new set of tyres. Underneath, the car is also said to be in ‘excellent’ condition. Overall, it’s a beautiful car to look at and to be seen in.
The Mechanics

The engine bay is very original and houses the same 1975cc engine that the car left the factory with. The seller reports that everything is in good order and that the car drives just as it should with smooth, strong acceleration, good brakes and no unusual noises to distract from the characteristic classic Alfa Romeo exhaust note. In all, he describes it as very pleasant to drive.
