1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint

Highlights

  • An extremely stylish Alfa, ready to be enjoyed
  • Resprayed paintwork and very original panels
  • Rebuilt engine and transmission

The Appeal

The Giulietta is an indisputably stylish car. Its sleek lines flow beautifully from front to rear, and it is almost effortlessly graceful. The two-door coupé styling is simple and effective, with no fussiness to be seen.
This particular Alfa has been used extensively with lots of money spent on maintenance in recent rears. The car was previously registered to an Englishman living in Vienna, who later moved to Switzerland and regularly drove the car between the UK and the Alps. He used the car on an Alfa rally in Austria, and drove it to Milan and Monza.
It has been the subject of considerable refurbishment work throughout its recent ownership, and carefully maintained since, with a rebuilt engine and gearbox, and resprayed paint adding up to make this an eminently desirable motorcar.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in Italy in April 1960
  • First owner lived near Milan
  • Copies of original Italian registration documents on file
  • ASI record of ownership back to 1960
  • Invoices of file for work completed in Austria, the UK and Switzerland
  • Previously owned by a British gentleman living in Vienna, who also owned a Morgan, so this Alfa was often serviced by the same Morgan garage
  • This owner then moved to Switzerland and registered the car in the UK
  • Historic MOT certificates
  • Reprinted workshop manual
  • Two sets of keys
  • Road Tax and MOT exempt
  • Purchased by the current owner from Black & White Garage in 2012
  • In the past decade it has reportedly covered around 1,000-1,500 miles per year

The Interior

  • Vinyl and cloth upholstery said to be very original
  • The carpets have been replaced
  • Stylish dashboard and instruments

This Giulietta still retains its original seats,  with the optional 2+2 rear bench seat. The two-tone blue upholstery appears to be very original save for some repair to the driver's seat. However the owner believes that it could have been an optional trim, as the standard was blue grey.
Well thought-out instrumentation and switchgear adorns the dashboard, while many of the features are believed to be original items. This includes the rear-view mirror, radio blanking plate, sun visors and door trims.
The carpets have been replaced and remain in good condition throughout, and the headlining is clean and secure. To the rear, the spacious boot contains the full size spare wheel and plenty of room for luggage.

The Exterior

  • Sleek, understated styling
  • Bare metal respray in Gardenia White, and bodywork repairs carried out in 2008
  • Solid underneath

The body panels appear to be very straight throughout. There are a couple of minor marks on the paintwork —as you would expect to see on a car which has been used — one where the door hinge rubbed, and there is a paint bubble on one sill which the vendor tells us hasn’t changed in 10 years.
All the trim and badges are complete and in good condition. One front grill has been repaired, but still could be improved. The chrome plating is good, with the front bumper having been re-plated. The rear bumper centre section is a little tarnished.
The underside of this Alfa is solid and well protected. The only evidence of historic repair is to the boot floor, whereas the sills and floors are original. It has been heavily treated with Dinitrol to preserve its sills & box sections.
The car runs on good steel wheels with chrome hubcaps. And the tyres are Vredestein Classics, which retain good tread. The rear tyres were replaced in 2021.

The Mechanics

  • The car has been previously rewired, had its brakes rebuilt and a new carburettor fitted
  • Original four-speed transmission rebuilt
  • A factory replacement engine block has been fitted

The previous owner had a new engine block fitted, as the original was deemed to be beyond repair, so an unstamped replacement item was reportedly fitted during the rebuild. It is said to be the type fitted to the first 1,300cc 105 series cars and therefore has an oil breather from the camshaft cover.  This was later rebuilt by Chris Robinson  in 2008 with the original 101 series cylinder head.
The vendor tells us that the engine is strong and maintains good oil pressure, with no overheating or untoward noises, and runs happily at 70 to 80 mph. Other improvements made by the current owner include a heat spacer between the inlet manifold and carburettor, a 123 distributor, as well as adjusting the carburettor jets.
The original four-speed transmission is said to be in good condition, having had new synchromesh rings fitted. The suspension and steering are also in good order, with new springs and a stiffer anti-roll bar. We’re also told that the brakes operate well and stop the car in a straight line.

Summary

Overall, this Giulietta is a very nicely presented example of an effortlessly stylish coupé. It has been the subject of extensive restoration work, including an older respray and more  mechanical expenditure. This is a well sorted car, ready for immediate use. It's the kind of car you’ll be proud to arrive in, and it will attract admiring glances wherever it goes.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
