The Appeal

Jaguar’s Mk2 was the clever makeover that outshone the original and became the doyen of bank robbers and bank managers. In 220bhp 3.8litre guise it was the original ‘super saloon’ and remains one of the most collectable of classic cars over 60 years after it went into production.

This smart 1960 3.8 Mk2 appears to have spent much of its life in America before moving to Finland and more recently to Italy. Clearly restored with later paintwork and a cream interior it usefully has power steering and an automatic gearbox to improve drivability. Usable and practical for trips with family and friends, it is a stylish and tempting prospect.

The History and Paperwork

  • VIN records indicate that this car was one of the last built in 1959
  • Early 3.8litre car from first year of Mk2 production
  • Factory LHD car with power steering and Borg Warner automatic gearbox
  • Appears to have spent the years 1977 to 1991 in America, including Florida
  • Subsequently has lived in Finland
  • Carries Finnish Technical Inspection valid to 5th October 2026
  • Now resides in Italy
  • Registered on Finnish register of historic vehicles

The Interior

  • Good condition interior appears to be an older refurbishment that has held up well
  • Cream leather seats with red piping in good condition but with some wear to the driver’s seat base and side
  • Veneer dashboard in good condition with good varnish but crack on left hand side where two sections are joined
  • Dials appear original and in good condition with only light wear to the black surrounds
  • Automatic gearbox with column shift
  • Factory fitted ‘speed control’ system that holds the car in gear going up or down hill
  • Attractive three spoke aluminium and wood steering wheel in good condition
  • Switchgear appears original and with slight signs of wear
  • Scuff below push start button in centre of dashboard
  • Red carpets and headlining appear to be a later retrim to a good standard
  • Period correct radio fitted
  • Door cards retrimmed in cream with good chrome fittings and door cappings

The Exterior

  • Attractive burgundy metallic paintwork does not appear to be a factory colour but certainly suits the car
  • Bodywork is very presentable with only very minor deterioration visible
  • Small amount of bubbling around the wing-top marker lights
  • Chips on offside rear wheel spat
  • Chromework in good condition with clean bumpers but pitting on rear lights
  • Lights and glasswork very presentable and complete
  • Chrome wire wheels equipped with American whitewall tyres
  • Underside reflects the condition of the paintwork being good with no visible issues to note
  • Supplied with orange front and rear lights for Italian homologation

The Mechanics

  • 3.8litre Jaguar XK engine with twin carburettors
  • Factory fitted Borg Warner 3spd automatic gearbox
  • Unfortunately at the time of writing we did not have access to the car’s service or maintenance history

Arguably few 60s classic saloons carry quite the allure of the Mk2 Jaguar, a car that combined four door practicality with sports car performance.

This early 3.8litre Mk2 is in a very attractive colour scheme and carries the reassurance of that Finnish Technical Certificate. Quick and practical with the benefit of power steering it will be a stylish addition to any journey.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
