The Appeal
The 3500GT was the cornerstone in Maserati's development. Before it hit the showrooms, the house of the trident was a racing powerhouse - now, it was carving out a path as a refined, road-going marque for Grand Touring. Introduced in 1957 with elegant Superleggera coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring and powered by a race-derived 3.5-litre inline-six, it combined genuine long-distance capability with the kind of understated Italian elegance that has become a trademark of Modena. Today, it is rightly regarded as one of the finest GTs of the '60s.
This particular example, delivered new on 10 September 1960 in Chiasso, is a matching-numbers car retaining its original engine and transmission. Between 2021 and 2023, it was the subject of a thorough restoration by a respected marque specialist, with the entire process documented by a detailed photographic file.
The quality of the work has been recognised too, with the car achieving multiple Concours d'Élégance awards since completion. As an early 1960 example, it's a particularly desirable spec, with a handsome colour scheme and fine _DSC0708.jpg18.68 MB

The handsome Carrozzeria-penned styling and impressive colour scheme make for a fine combo. This is a deeply attractive classic, in fabulous order following a full restoration. The bodywork is in fine order, the unspoilt silhouette a real thing of beauty, while the paintwork still carries a fine lustre.
The iconic Maserati branding is all present and correct, the windows all appear crystal clear, and the underside is beautifully kept, with nice clean springs and floorpans throughout.
Internally, the car is very well presented. The upholstery is clean and well-kept in period-correct black leather and carpets, with clean instruments and a very handsome dashboard. It's very evocative - a great place for driver and passenger alike. _DSC0810-HDR.jpg10.49 MB
The Mechanics
3,484 cc inline-six engine producing approximately 220 horsepower
4-speed manual gearbox
Twin Weber 42 DCOE carburettors
Aluminium engine construction with cast-iron liners
Front disc brakes with Girling components
Salisbury rear axle
Drivetrain, running gear, suspension, and braking systems restored between 2021 and 2023
With 220hp on tap, it's little wonder the 3500GT carved out an impressive reputation for Maserati's first road-going exploits. It was perfect for cruising - laid back and comfortable with a race-bred chassis and genuine grand-prix genetics at its core. It's a delicate, highly-strung piece of kit that demands respect.
Following its extensive restoration, we understand that this example is running exactly as it should.
