Background

A follow on to the 100/6 the Austin Healey 3000 was a British sports car produced by the British Motor Corporation between 1959 and 1967 where upon it was succeeded by the MGC.

Utilising throughout Austin Healeys 3000cc straight six engines, coupled to rear wheel drive via a 4-speed gearbox, they offered an exceptional, sporting driving experience.  Many sporting successes in both racing and rallying were achieved throughout their production years, and they are still highly successful in todays cut and thrust of historic motorsport.

History

According to the car’s original buff logbook, it was first registered on the 22nd of November 1962 to a gentleman from the Cardiff area of South Wales.

It then passed through a number of hands in the 60s but then the trail goes cold.  Subsequently purchased by Colin Stewart of Northallerton in 2003, he then set about a full restoration to racing / rallying specification.

In 2005 the vendor, deciding that a foray into Historic Rallying was in order, spotted the Healey for sale and a deal was done.
Since then, the glorious Healey has been a frequent competitor on both Uk & European events in the hands of its enthusiastic owners.

To quote the vendor “The car was entered into the 2005 Classic Marathon London Greenwich to Lisbon, a 10-day event through the Picos de Europa and on through central Portugal arriving in Lisbon. We won the event, so it was a good start for relative novices. Over the next ten years we competed in many UK and European Events including a wet week in Iceland, with varied success, elation and frustration but travelled to many destinations we would not have visited and made many good friends along the way. “

The vendor continues to participate in historic rallies and with advancing years, now prefers the space and comfort afforded by his Pagoda Mercedes but says it’s “not as much fun or performance” when comparing to the Healey 3000.

Paperwork

There is of course a current V5c registration document, there’s also the original buff logbook.

There is a current FIVA (Federation Internationale Des Vehicules Anciens ) registration document and a file containing restoration pictures and receipts for many works carried out over the years.

This car has an Mot to Dec ’21.

Interior

Just take a good look at the dash photo’s, this car has all you’ll ever need to compete in historic road rallies. It’s very functional and built for a single purpose, ie navigating around a complicated route, day or night, paved or unpaved roads & keeping to a tight time schedule.

The rest of the inside is in great condition, the “bucket” seats are very supportive and in 2017, the whole interior was treated to a refit in quality leather to the tune of £5,800. 4-point Willans harnesses are fitted along with a fire extinguisher.

Purposeful, functional, practical and comfortable about sums it up.

Exterior

Black paint over Minilite replica alloy wheels, stylish.

This car has been used as it was designed to do and therefore the paintwork on very close inspection, has one or two chips & a little micro scrolling. It’s honest & shows that it’s been regularly cleaned but it’s a rally car so to be expected. Stand back only a couple of feet though and as you’ll see in the photos, it looks fabulous.

Chrome work is solid and possibly original, certainly the whole exterior is attractive and just how a good used competition car should look.
The hood would appear to be fairly new and fits well over the roll bar, offering protection from raging elements when needed.

Overall, a great looking car fitted with suitable period accessories which would attract attention at any classic car show, or more importantly Classic Marathon stage.

Mechanicals

The Healey had a complete engine rebuilt in 2014 carried out by Keith Savage of KSS North Ltd, a well-known historic rally specialist.

It has a rally cam and coupled with triple carbs, is thought to produce 160 -170 bhp and sounds just fabulous through its side exit exhausts.
It drives through an original 4 speed gearbox which includes overdrive in third & top gears. An oil cooler had been added to help with heat dispersion when the engine is working hard up those alpine passes.

When moved around for the photographs, the engine sounded quiet & smooth and appeared to drive easily even though it was chilly on the day and the engine wasn’t up to temperature, signs of a well sorted car.
Along with this car are 6 spare wire wheels with tyres, a hard top, the original steering wheel and original seats, photos inc.

Appeal

This Healey isn’t really a Sunday afternoon cruiser although it’s more than capable of doing so, it’s been built to be used in historic rallies and reliability events and with its 160-170 bhp, Avon ZZR tyres & navigation equipment, it’s just the ticket for competitive motoring.
Big Healeys look good, sound even better, and are a joy to drive, open top motoring at its best!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
