1964 Alvis TE21

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Lovely example of the TE21
  • Older restoration sympathetically recommissioned
  • Drives well and ready to use
  • Charming, gentle patina

THE APPEAL

The Alvis TE21 is one of the finest GTs of its era and a car that in many ways deserves to be more collectable than it is.

With production limited to just 352 example, the 3.0-litre GT was a handsome brute, either in GT or drophead form.

This one is a 1964 car from fairly early in the TE’s four-year production run and is an older restoration, completed around 20 years ago and used moderately since.

It’s a charming and characterful car with a beguiling patina

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Some history
  • Old photographs
  • Engine rebuilt
  • Handbook
  • Parts lists
  • Old MOT certificates
  • Old V5s
  • Current UK V5C
  • Tax and MOT exempt

THE INTERIOR

  • Retrimmed in oatmeal leather
  • New blue carpets
  • Wood trim
  • Original Motorola radio

Retrimmed during its rebuild in smart oatmeal-coloured leather, the Alvis’s cabin is a pleasant place to be, with rich, well-presented leather and smart dark blue carpets, also renewed when the car was recommissioned.

The headlining and dash are original and show signs of age, but in a gently patinated manner. There’s some light cracking to the dash surface but it by no means detracts from the cabin’s overall appearance.

It also still has its original Motorola radio, which is in working order.

There are also plaques inside the door shut for both the body maker – Mulliner Park Ward – and Grose, which was the original supplying dealer in Northamptonshire.

THE EXTERIOR

  • All original panels
  • Separate chassis
  • Wire wheels
  • Sound and very smartly presented
Smarty presented in dark blue, the Alvis is a handsome car to look at and it’s in generally fine order, with only a few minor marks and some slight pitting on the chromework – again, more in the realms of gently patinated than tired or worn-out. It’s just a lovely old car in very tidy order overall.

Underneath, the chassis appears strong from a basic inspection and there are no visible dents or damage to any of the panels.

The wire wheels are in good order, but a couple of the tyres look quite old and would benefit from replacement.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2,993cc 6cyl OHV
  • Four-speed manual
  • Kenlowe fan
  • Previous engine rebuild

The Alvis’s 3.0-litre straight-six was completely rebuilt during the car’s restoration and it’s in good running order, with a photographic record of the rebuild.

It has also had quite a lot of mechanical work lately, to cure a coolant leak and a couple of small oil leaks.

It runs sweetly and is described by the vendor as a car that drives very well with no known problems.

SUMMARY

While it’s not perfect, this is a really nice example of the TE21 in smart, enchanting condition.

It carries a gentle patina and looks fabulous in its dark blue colour scheme.

It’s a great opportunity to add one of the finest British GTs ever made to your collection while they’re still affordable.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
