1964 Lancia Flavia Coupé 1800

Highlights

  • Just 48,666 kilometres indicated on the odometer which the vendor believes to be correct
  • We’re informed that everything works perfectly and the car is fantastic to drive
  • Recently serviced and mechanically overhauled
  • Very original inside and out
  • Said to have been stored indoors throughout its life and therefore in very sound condition

The Appeal

Never ones to do anything by the book, Lancia could always be counted upon to pioneer new technologies and the Flavia is a case in point. With a longitudinal boxer engine powering the front wheels, unequal-length wishbones making up the front suspension and disc brakes on all four corners, the Flavia was a technological marvel.

Paradoxically, Lancia still favoured the noble tradition of coachbuilding and so the Flavia was offered in a number of body styles designed by Italy’s preeminent carrozzerias. The Pininfarina Coupé remains a firm favourite amongst enthusiasts, and with its flowing curves, it’s easy to see why.
Here we have one such highly original example, resplendent in a very pleasing shade of blue with a contrasting red interior. Presented in fantastic condition and apparently benefitting from a recent mechanical overhaul, this Lancia should be ready for its next owner to use and enjoy. We understand that it has spent much of its life in a private collection, always stored indoors when not in use. The 48,666 kilometres indicated on the odometer are said to be warranted and the condition reflects this.
For anyone in search of a fantastic example, you need look no further…

The History and Paperwork

  • Italian ownership documentation present
  • Complete with its registration paperwork and Italian number plates
  • Part of a private car collection, used sparingly and carefully stored
  • We’re informed that it has been judiciously maintained and benefits from a comprehensive recent service and light overhaul of the mechanicals

The Interior

  • Red upholstery in excellent overall condition
  • Very original, with no later additions or modifications in evidence
  • Esoteric original switchgear - all apparently in great working order
In a manner only the Italians seem able to achieve, this interior is exquisite, without a hint of pretension. Everything feels well thought out and expertly put together, but nothing is in any way gratuitous.
A simple, elegant dashboard faced in attractive veneer holds a horizontal instrument binnacle, clearly displaying all the key information the driver needs. There’s barely any wear to any of the surfaces, the top remains undamaged by UV light and the aforementioned veneer is still in fantastic condition. Besides a light patina to the unusual switchgear and the controls, there’s little to give away that this car has been used.
The carpeting is still quite presentable and is protected by period overmats. The headlining remains in lovely order and appears well affixed to the roof in all the right places. The red upholstery adds a dash of zeal to proceedings and has worn very well. There’s barely any creasing, cracking or signs of abrasion. We didn’t spot any holes or indeed anything we’d term damage. The door furniture is very much of its time and the various handles all seem to function as they should. Simply lined in ribbed rubber matting, the generous boot space presents really well and is very usable.

The Exterior

  • Charming blue paintwork with remarkably few imperfections
  • Straight bodywork with no signs of damage or corrosion
  • The brightwork, badging and wheels all remain really smart
Pininfarina seldom put a foot wrong and their work on the Flavia Coupé was exemplary. Its flowing lines are highlighted perfectly by a lighter hue and this mid blue sets this example off perfectly.
The paint is in really good order, with the vendor assuring us that there are no deep scratches or notable chips. We observed that the rear valance exhibits a couple of marks along its lower edge, but this is barely visible unless you’re viewing the car from underneath. There’s no evidence of serious corrosion to the panels or underside and the vendor comments that this car is very sound structurally.
All the badging, trims and chromework presents nicely, with no excessive pitting or any obvious damage that we could make out. We enjoy the fine details such as the crossed flags bearing the Lancia and Pininfarina motifs, as well as curious features like the car’s distinctive quad headlamps. The wheels present well, are completed with hubcaps and come shod in period appropriate Michelin tyres.

The Mechanics

  • Desirable 1.8-litre four-cylinder boxer engine
  • Four-speed manual gearbox with column change
  • Front-wheel drive
The vendor informs us that a recent mechanical overhaul included the following work:
  • New fuel lines
  • Overhauled brake lines and brake booster
  • New brake callipers
  • Replacement of the spark plugs, oil, petrol filter, oil filter and points
Following the aforementioned mechanical work, we understand that this Lancia is lovely to drive, selecting gears smoothly via that precise column change and coming to a stop in a timely manner thanks to disc brakes all-round. The interesting flat-four engine in 1800 cc form is said to run without issue and produces adequate power to make this Flavia very usable.

Summary

Every car enthusiast should own a Lancia at some point. So, whether this is your first, or simply the next in a long line of Lancias, be sure not to miss out on this charming Flavia Pininfarina Coupé.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
