1964 MGB Roadster

Highlights

  • Superb example
  • Sublime condition inside and out
  • Extensive restoration in 2005

The Appeal

Iconic, adored, sought after, these are just some of the words that describe Britain's best selling sports car, the mighty MGB. Half a million variants were produced from 1962 until 1980, yet we’ll never get tired of being charmed by these gorgeous cult classics, especially the early models like this 1964 Roadster.

This Tartan Red enchanter is in fabulous condition inside and out thanks to caring ownership and an extensive restoration 17 years ago. A truly sublime car, ready to tour and provide the enjoyment and smile inducing memories only a MGB can.

The History and Paperwork

  • Over £20,000 spent on restoration
  • Restored between 2003 - 2005
  • Folder of invoices
  • Documented maintenance history
  • MOT until June 2023 (image included in the gallery)
First registered in October 1964 by Hallens of Cambridge, this MGB Roadster originally left the factory finished in Iris Blue, with a blue interior and blue hood. Over the course of its life, it has been in the caring ownership of seven individuals with the current being the keeper since 2015 and the prior owner from 1997.

Documentation of the car undergoing a substantial restoration between 2003-2005 at Bucks Sports & Classic Car Centre, with body preparation carried out by G C Auto refinishing in 2004 is present, alongside a large history folder full of invoices, past MOT certificates and maintenance records. Since being purchased in 2015 the car has been garaged, only being used on occasion and only on dry days.

The Interior

  • Fantastic condition
  • Black leather seats
  • Minor wear on drivers seat
Inside the MGB you're greeted with comfortable and pleasant black leather seats with red piping, plus door cards and carpets to match. There's a familiar theme here, black dash and black dials are accompanied by chrome surrounds and switches, it's a subtle but tasteful design with the only minor sign of wear being on the driver's seat and bolster, everything else is delightful and in very good  condition.

There has been an aftermarket Motorola radio which has been fitted to be used with an MP3 lead and smartphone. Also has been fitted a battery volt dial, again suitable and matches the factory dials perfectly. In conclusion, the interior of this MGB is grand, not brash or obtrusive, more civilised and pleasing.

The Exterior

  • Sublime condition
  • Black hood, in perfect order
  • Fantastic chromework & trim
  • Tonneau cover included
The beauty of the MGB cannot be escaped, especially in early roadster form. Bright, gleaming chrome bumpers, beautiful chrome wire wheels, attractive styling and low sporty stance are all present on this car, no wonder it’s one of the best selling British Sports Cars ever made.

The car was repainted from the original Iris Blue to Tartan Red and the hood changed to black during the restoration process in 2004, which is still in impeccable condition. Most panels were replaced, being treated , primed and painted before being fitted to the original body, this level of work has lengthened the lifespan of the car significantly and even though the work was carried out nearly 20 years ago, the car is in amazing condition.

We absolutely adore the colour combination, which is enhanced by the chromework, all in outstanding order.  This car is magnificent, a very fine example of the beloved model.

The Mechanics

  • Starts and runs smoothly
  • Rebuilt engine & gearbox
  • Electronic ignition
On arrival the car was repositioned for the photographer, it started easily and ran smoothly without any dramatics or concerns, no doubt testament to the comprehensive and no expense spared treatment the car has had. The 1.8L petrol engine is renowned to be reliable and easily maintained thanks to the huge owners club and part availability.

Past work included an engine and gearbox rebuild, carried out as part of the restoration in 2004, plus additional work in 2018 which included a new clutch, overhaul of gearbox and overdrive, thermostat and general servicing. Underbody protection has also been applied to keep the running gear and body free from any undesirables. In addition, a new MOT will be carried out prior to the new owners collection. Overall, the car from what we can tell is mechanically healthy and ready to be driven.

Summary

Reliable and great looking, the MGB is a popular choice for many classic car enthusiast and this stunning example should be at the top of any potential buyers list thanks to its incredible condition. It’s ready to provide those long awaited picnic basket adventures, summertime escapes and memories to last a lifetime.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
