Americans used the term 'British Invasion' to describe the sociocultural phenomenon in which the UK's '60s counterculture found its way stateside, but Britain were actually doing the same thing with sports cars. Launched in 1961, the Triumph TR4 proved succesful on the road and on the racetrack on both sides of the Atlantic, with many, such as this 1964 example, being sold in left-hand drive to an adoring American public.
Now repatriated to the UK, this Triumph was restored between 2013 and 2015 by a retired mechanical engineer in Scotland. It has been owned and loved by the vendor since it was completed, but a hip replacement means he now has to sadly say goodbye to the car he dreamed of owning since he was a teenager.
It was a fundamentally sound car to start with, but was stripped, structurally repaired, converted to right-hand drive and professionally painted during its restoration, as well as being completely retrimmed inside. T8lO1DOtkQtoCHVoMRUq27udilpDKqRCzZX1pyZi.jpg1.54 MB

Inside, the TR4 has been comprehensively refurbished with immaculate beige leather seats, along with an aftermarket veneer-finish dashboard, new carpets and door cards, all of which are in superb condition with no notable faults.
Finished in Signal Red with wire wheels, the TR4 looks absolutely fantastic and sits really well on the road.
The restoration is a few years old but it still looks amazing, having been carried out to an exceptional standard, and the car carefully looked after and garaged since. The paint is pretty much flawless, the only very slight damage being a small chip on the inner door shut where the vendor trapped something in the door. It’s not visible from outside the car.
The chrome and trim are in superb order and the underside is in fine condition. The body was removed from the car during its restoration and any structural repairs carried out to a high standard, while the wings and bonnet were renewed.
Under the bonnet, you'll find Triumph's familiar four-cylinder petrol engine, derived from that of the Standard Vanguard. It’s a very simple unit and is extremely easy to maintain, whilst in the lightweight TR4 body it provides a perfectly decent turn of performance. It’s an engine renowned for its reliability, too.
This is a truly wonderful example of what is one of the most desirable classic Triumphs of the 1960s.
With an interesting backstory it’s a wonderful specimen and would be an ideal car to show as well as enjoy out on the road. It really is that good.
