The Appeal

With their full-on sensory assault, convertibles offer their own kind of magic. Exposed as you are to nature’s elements, there is a the heightened sense of motion, the rush of passing scenery, the fragrance of fresh open air as dappled shade flickers across your Ray-Bans. Such fun!

Well before the TR4 made its appearance in 1961, Triumph had an established reputation for comfortable open top grand touring cars. The automaker’s reputation was enhanced by the TR4’s improved quality, ease of use and mechanical hardiness over its TR3 predecessor.
This comprehensively restored Triumph TR4 is in extraordinarily fine fettle having been maintained to an impeccably high standard. It would make a quality addition to an evolving collection or be an ‘only child’ to enjoy as desired – and hopefully, not just on Sundays.

History and Paperwork

  • Dry-stored/driven, garaged when not in use
  • Just four former keepers
  • V5 certificate in current keeper’s name
This particularly handsome TR4 concluded its build on 15th September, 1964 and was dispatched to Triumph dealer E.W. Hatfield of Sheffield three weeks later. Through all of its 58 years, the specification for this car has remained the same, that is to say, original colour scheme, a classic Signal Red (Code 32) exterior and a black Vynide interior with ‘Surrey top’.
In addition, further equipment included a full set of five spoke wire-wheels, a removable black vinyl roof that can be attached to the Surrey top, heater, windscreen washers and Goodyear-tubed tyres.
Accompanying the sale will be the V5C in the current keeper’s name, the car’s heritage certificate issued by the British Motor Industry Trust, a few photographs from its restoration and the original Owner’s Handbook.

The Interior

  • Fully original
  • Smart black Vynide-clad furniture
  • Tidy and largely unblemished interior
For its comprehensive restoration – sadly at an unknown but thought  to be relatively recent time – much of the original interior was retained and recommissioned and the car is all the better for it.
As was standard at the time, the interior furniture is clad in black Vynide leatherette and presents in very good condition. Beneath the tidy carpets, the floorpan is said by the owner to be in rude health. As with the dashboard and centre console, the door cards, sun visors and other soft furnishings present in remarkably good condition.

The only noticeable interior blemish is the tear in the rubber gear lever boot, which would of course be an inexpensive fix via a new or recommissioned replacement.
It is quite evident that since its rebuild, the car has been lovingly used but garaged away from the elements when not being enjoyed, such is the high quality of presentation of the car.

The Exterior

  • Presented in original-coloured Signal Red
  • Brightwork is in very good order with minor blemishes
  • Original wire-spoked wheels
Handsomely presented in the original colour of Signal Red that it would have left the factory, this stunning Triumph TR4 is a truly fine example of its kind.
The smart 15-inch wire-spoked wheels appear blemish free all-round and are shod with a new set of Pirelli Cinturato P1 tyres all round.  The fifth matching spare wheel resides in the boot along with the prerequisite tools.
At the front, the headlight lenses are crystal clear and the plastic indicator/reflector lenses show no hint of sun-bleaching. The same may be said for the rear light clusters. With minor exception, the brightwork around the car is in exceptional condition and a cursory glance down each flank shows no evidence of collision damage. Even the front number plate and valance, for all their vulnerability, remain blemish free. Like the more visible parts of this car, the underside and lower sills present in very good order with hardly any natural oxidation that may reasonably be expected on a car of this age.
There are several minor blemishes to be noted and all are pictured in the gallery below: there is some pitting to the rear light chrome surrounds, scuffs due to a maligned driver’s door on the bulk end and B-pillar and cracks in the rear window chrome strip surround. Barring one or two other minor paintwork blemishes, the car presents in truly remarkable condition for its 58 years.

The Mechanics

  • Two original keys
  • Runs and drives particularly well
  • Brake disc and calliper upgrades
  • Fully maintained, no expense spared
At the photo location, the 2138cc in-line four started first and every time and settled into an appreciative burble. The manual four-speed gearbox connected smoothly with the clutch engaging with no drama, requiring just a light feathering of the revs to get underway.
The custodian reports the car to be in healthy mechanical condition with steering, brakes, engine, drivetrain and running gear performing as well as their respective engineers intended. The car’s brakes recently underwent upgrades to the discs and callipers. In short, it's ready to be enjoyed.

Summary

A beautifully presented example of a sympathetically restored and well maintained TR4 in original specification.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
