1964 Volkswagen Transporter Camper Splitscreen

Highlights

  • Bodywork restored late 2022
  • New interior and engine in recent years
  • Running well and ready to be enjoyed

The Appeal

The iconic VW Transporter remains the quintessential camper van. With its classic, retro styling and compact, versatile interior layout, VW’s Type 2 represents the vintage van life dream.

For mobile adventure-seekers, the Transporter's modest dimensions and nimble handling make it ideal for excursions down narrow country lanes and tight village streets. And the Transporter's legendary air-cooled engine grants it a mechanical simplicity that many modern vans lack.

Of course, one of the joys of van ownership is taking the opportunity to create something that’s a little unique and the current owner of this 1964 T2 added to its previous new engine and interior when it went for full bodywork restoration in Dec 2022. A Kawasaki Green paint job certainly helps it to stand out from the crowd and it remains in lovely condition inside and out.

If you’re looking for a classic camper that will have bystanders stopping to chat and take pictures then this one makes a great case for itself.

History and Paperwork

  • Registered 31 Jan 1964
  • Imported to the UK at some stage
  • V5 present in owner’s name
  • Some old MOT certificates
  • Receipt for sports exhaust shown
  • The owner reports that there is a further folder full of history
  • MOT and tax exempt
  • ULEZ compliant

The Interior

  • All new interior a few years ago
  • New front seats
  • Modern stereo with new speakers
  • New roof lining
  • Fridge

Open the door to the cabin and you’ll immediately see the quality of the fit and finish. New front seats have a flash of green to coordinate with the exterior and the classic ‘banjo’ steering wheel sits above a pristine dashboard that houses the modern stereo. Hertz speakers and subs have been nicely integrated and the owner tells us that the system ‘sounds lovely.’

In the rear, the reupholstered seats continue the green highlights and there is a range of modern cabinets for storage and an integrated fridge with attached flip up table. The headlining is new and matching carpets and cushions are the finishing touches on a refit that looks barely used.

For practicality there is a leisure battery, 240V hook up, 3 pin plug and LED lights. Overall, it’s very nicely equipped and in great condition.

The Exterior

  • Bodywork restored and resprayed Dec 2022
  • Eye catching Kawasaki Green paintwork
  • Double opening doors with canopy
  • New bumpers front and back
  • New lights and indicators

As the photographs will attest, this is a stunning looking van. White over Kawasaki Green paintwork makes for a distinctive look and the details are all nicely judged, too. From the prominent VW badge on the front to the new chrome bumpers, new lights and pristine wheels, it presents beautifully. A ‘64 splitty’ graphic on the rear quarters completes the makeover.

The paintwork above the front windscreen shows some small bubbles but otherwise is in good condition and is complimented by beautfiul chrome work throughout. The rear window is mirrored for privacy and the van is provided with a cover to keep it under wraps during the winter months.

Overall (providing you like green!) it’s all you would hope for.

The Mechanics

  • Brand new 1500cc engine installed a few years ago
  • Sports exhaust
  • Immobiliser fitted
  • In good running order

Popping open the bonnet at the rear reveals a very tidy engine bay housing a new 1500cc engine that was installed just 4,011 miles ago.

The owner reports that it always starts first time and that everything works as it should, while the sports exhaust makes for an entertaining soundtrack. In short, it’s ready to go.

Summary

A nicely restored splitscreen which will make you new friends the world over. In lovely condition, it’s ready to take its next owner on new adventures.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you\'re able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
