1965 Daimler 2.5 V8

Highlights

  • Stunning Opalescent Green paintwork
  • Just 54,846 miles from new
  • Extensive history file
  • Full independent service history

The Appeal

Based on the Mk2 Jaguar, the Daimler 2.5 V8 (and latterly the 250) was the last Daimler to feature a Daimler drivetrain. When production ceased in 1969, all future Daimlers used Jaguar running gear, so this saloon is a real milestone vehicle.

This example is presented in lovely, original condition, benefitting from a beautiful specification and extremely well documented history. It’s an enchanting car, and one that would sit proudly in any collection.

The Interior

  • Beige leather upholstery
  • Polished wood dashboard and trim
  • Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • Optional reclining front seats and belts

With opulent wood trim and deeply cushioned leather seats, the cabin of this Daimler is a lovely place to be. The leather upholstery on the seats and door cards looks to be in excellent condition, with some light wear evident, but no damage or tears we could see. Similarly, the front arm-rests present very well, with no notable wear evident.

This complements the deeply polished wooden dash beautifully. The dash itself presents very well, with the wood being in fine condition for its age, and all of the controls and switchgear looking very smart, with minimal wear. We’re assured by the owner that everything functions as it should. The only item missing is a radio system, but the space and wiring is there for the new owner to fit a stereo, should they so desire.

We’re told by the vendor that some of the wood trim by the windscreen would benefit from some attention, but otherwise it all appears to be very good. The wooden window surrounds and door caps show no signs of warping, cracking or delamination, and maintain a beautiful lustre.

The headlining and carpets are likewise reported to be in good condition, with no sagging or damage to the headlining. There are also over-mats present in the front of the car, to further protect the carpets.

At the rear, the boot area is solid and appears in good condition, with just a couple of areas where surface corrosion is appearing. Under the carpet, there is a full-size spare wire wheel. The boot also contains the wheel removal kit, jack and original Daimler toolkit.

The Exterior

  • Opalescent Green paintwork
  • Excellent brightwork
  • Optional wire wheels
  • Optional wing mirrors

The first thing that strikes you when you look at this Daimler is that brilliant colour. Opalescent Green suits the lines of the car beautifully, and really helps all the brightwork to stand out. As a contrast to that sumptuous and light leather interior, it works exceptionally well.

On inspection, the paint and bodywork is in fine, unrestored condition. As you’d expect with a vehicle of this age, there is the occasional minor blemish and scratch, and there is some light blistering and corrosion beginning to appear on the wheel arch lips, front valance and sills, but nothing that would cause us concern. Overall, the body of the car appears solid, straight and very well cared for.

Underneath, the car looks to be in very good condition. The floor pans, chassis rails and drivetrain elements we could see look to be in excellent condition, with minimal surface corrosion and no signs of damage or repair we could observe.

Likewise, the external trim and brightwork is complete and presents very well. The brightwork, in particular, looks excellent. With a light patina and very minor pitting in places, it speaks to the car’s age and history while still looking to be in remarkably good condition.

The wire wheels were a factory option and are in reasonable condition. There is some pitting and tarnishing to the chrome, but overall they are perfectly usable. They are shod in tyres with a healthy amount of tread, so should have plenty of service left in them.

The Mechanics

  • 2,548cc V8 engine
  • 3-speed automatic transmission

Deriving its power from Daimler’s own hemispherical head V8, this car creates a delicious V8 burble to accompany the driving experience. Gear changes are catered for by a column-shift Borg Warner D1/D2 3-speed automatic transmission, with power being delivered to the real wheels. An immobiliser switch has also been fitted to the car for peace of mind.

The engine bay itself presents in excellent, clean condition. There is no evidence of leaks or overheating, no signs of damage or significant corrosion, and overall everything looks to be in fine order.

We’re told by the owner that the car drives very well, with an excellent exhaust note and great handling. They are not aware of any mechanical issues.

Summary

Few classic cars are as well loved as the Mk2 Jaguar and the Daimler 2.5 V8. With handsome lines, characterful engines and cosseting luxury, it’s easy to see why. They make for a fine regular use classic, with parts readily available, and are an excellent investment as they’re held in such high regard and always sought after.

This car is one of the nicest examples we’ve seen. Highly original, with a beautiful specification and documented history going right back to the original order, there simply aren’t many more like this around.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
