THE BACKGROUND

Maserati has always been a brand steeped in its own very special form of romance. There are very few cars ever produced that are desirable, cool or as truly amazing to look at than those produced by the Italian company, which has been spinning out some of the best looking cars in the world for all of its life.
Ferraris and Lamborghinis might be faster or more agile through the bends, but it's impossible to overlook a Maserati’s pure beauty - and the Sebring is a model that has that in spades.
Named after the company’s victory in the 1957 Sebring 12 Hour race, the big coupe ran from 1962 until 1968. This example is one of the very earliest of the Series Two cars made, which had a slightly more powerful 265bhp 3.7-litre engine. It is also extremely rare in that it's a factory right hand drive model; one of only 15 believed to have been produced.

THE HISTORY

Unlike most of the Sebrings in the UK (not that there were ever many), this example was supplied new to the British market and has been here all its life.
It was supplied to Maserati Concessionaires in London in March 1965.
While its early history beyond that isn't known, in recent times the car has been owned by a collector who recently commissioned a partial restoration, bare metal respray and engine rebuild to be carried out by Project Heaven - a highly regarded classic vehicle workshop near Peterborough, which specialises in high value and concours classics.
The car is the fourth Series Two Sebring built, as testified by the build plate under the bonnet. It is also one of only a handful to have left the factory in right-hand-drive UK specification.

THE PAPERWORK

Sadly, there isn't a huge amount of paperwork with the Maserati. There is, of course, a lot more recent material including receipts for parts and the restoration costs carried out by Project Heaven, but very few early documents.

It is offered for sale with a V5C in the vendor’s name.

THE EXTERIOR

This is a fabulous looking car that has the added benefit of being fresh from a partial restoration, including a bare metal respray in its original Blu Sera Metallizzato.
The paint finish is absolutely flawless all over, and the colour looks superb, set off by restored chrome work and professionally refurbished 16-inch Borrani wire wheels.
During its restoration, the Maserati was given extensive body repairs where required, with the floors and rear chassis rails welded and the underside treated, rust proofed and undersealed on completion.
It really is a handsome looking car, and must be one of the best restored Sebrings in the world.

THE INTERIOR

When the car was taken off the road to be restored the decision was made to not fully refurbish its interior as the vast majority of it was still in perfectly good order.
As a result, the carpets and red leather seats were removed and stored during the rebuild then very carefully cleaned with some small localised repairs carried out - then put back into the car.
The result is a cabin that is absolutely charming, as although it isn't perfect, it is in generally fine order with just a few small cracks, marks and mottles preventing it from being perfect. The car retains its original patina.
The most notable of these is some wear to the side part of the passenger seat, which has incurred some rub marks from the seat belt. The same panel on the driver’s side has been previously repaired.
All of the dials and switches work as they should and a particularly nice feature is the delicate Malvino steering wheel with its narrow wooden rim.

THE MECHANICS

The 3.7-litre straight six was rebuilt as part of the car’s restoration and has had new bearings and a general overhaul, while the cylinder head has been converted to be compatible with unleaded fuel.
The twin cam unit is fed by a Lucas mechanical fuel injection system, which was a major innovation for its day.
The vendor reports that it runs and drives very well indeed and sounds fantastic. The brakes, steering and suspension were overhauled as and where necessary during the car’s rebuild so it doesn't require any additional work.

This is both an incredibly rare and an incredibly beautiful car that is bound to be a major attraction on the world concours scene, as well as among the classic car community in general.
It is exceedingly rare, being both a really early Series Two Sebring, an incredibly low chassis number of 0007, and a factory produced right-hand-drive car example originally owned by Maserati concessionaires of London and kept in the UK all its life.
It absolutely oozes charm, from the gentle patina of the interior to the absolutely stunning metallic blue paint work.
Make no mistake, this is much more than just a car. Yes it's beautiful and yes, it really is a fabulous vehicle to both look at and to drive. But it is also a proper collectors’ piece, the likes of which do not exist elsewhere.
