The Appeal
There had been Mercedes SLs before, but the W113 was the one that amalgamated the grand touring and sporting potential of the W121 190SL and W198 300SL into one single model. It was built for the wide, open American interstates, but these comfortable, long-legged cars are equally at home cruising English lanes or European autoroutes.
All of which explains their enduring appeal. They make excellent touring cars, particularly when equipped with the 4spd auto box as here. It is an original UK market RHD car finished in ivory/beige with a brown hard top roof and lighter brown folding soft top. The car left the factory with the M127 2.3L straight-six fuel-injected engine, but now features a rebuilt 2.8L unit.
The car is in very good condition inside and out, with the black-trimmed cabin retaining its original Bakelite wheel and featuring the rare ‘Kinderkarren’ rear seat conversion. This unusual side-facing third seat expands the car’s usability and features a built-in footwell.
With that more powerful engine mated to the auto box, this car looks perfect for some summer classic touring events or road trips.
