1966 Triumph TR4a

Highlights

  • Comprehensive pictures of ground-up restoration
  • Excellent condition
  • IRS and overdrive

The Appeal

There were a few changes made to the TR4 to give it the TR4A designation, such as the front lights and indicators, but the big improvement to the quintessential British roadster was the addition of Independent Rear Suspension, considerably improving the cars handling and ride quality.

Restored by Triumph enthusiast Tom Wordsworth over a prolonged period from 1995 to 2010, from the chassis up, the car has been in long-term fellow enthusiast ownership since the car’s completion in 2010.

Always a favourite as a great usable classic roadster this TR4A is presented in excellent condition with a comprehensive set of photographs on 2 cds that document the extent and progress of the total restoration.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1966
  • Thoroughly restored between 1995 and 2010
  • Restored by Triumph specialist
  • MOT exempt
  • V5c present
  • 2 sets of keys
  • Spare wheel
During the cars extensive restoration, the chassis was blasted, painted and re-assembled with all new components and suspension, it’s had new sills, floors, boot floor, rear deck and boot lid. The engine was stripped and rebuilt using new pistons and liners, the differential and the gearbox were rebuilt, and the gearbox was fitted with overdrive. The whole car was sprayed in British Racing Green and the interior was re-trimmed with a John Skinner Light Oatmeal trim with leather seats and thick dark green carpets.

It’s had very light and enjoyable use over the past 5 years with its current owner, who has continued to keep the car garaged and well maintained.

The Interior

  • Leather seats
  • New hood, door cards and carpets
  • Deep pile dark green carpets
  • Light Oatmeal trim
  • Wood steering wheel and dashboard
  • Hidden immobiliser switch
  • Excellent condition throughout

Fully re-trimmed with a new wooden dashboard, hood and carpets the interior presents very well with the original seats being re-trimmed in Oatmeal leather along with matching door cards.

There are very few signs of wear to be found inside the cars small and comfortable cabin with all the dials, instruments and switchgear all looking good and all functioning correctly.

The Exterior

  • British Racing Green
  • New black hood
  • Wire wheels
  • Excellent chrome
  • Great overall condition

There are a few paint imperfections and the odd stone chip to be found around the otherwise excellent bodywork, but otherwise it presents very well and is a very attractive classic sports car, with excellent wire wheels, tyres and brightwork.

The Mechanics

  • Fully rebuilt 2,138cc engine
  • Rebuilt 4 speed gearbox with overdrive
  • All new running gear and brakes
  • Electronic ignition
  • Stainless steel exhaust
  • Excellent mechanical condition

There have only been two careful owners since the car’s complete restoration, and it is reported to be in excellent mechanical shape having been subject to very light use in both cases. Although the clock reads just over 14k miles this is difficult to verify.

It was last serviced a couple of years ago but has hardly been driven since so it might need the oil changing, but very little else.

Under the bonnet is neat and clean and the current owner reports that it drives very nicely indeed, with absolutely no issues to advise.

The Summary

Expertly restored from the ground up the car is a lovely example of the Triumph TR4A, which has benefitted from two very careful owners and Triumph enthusiasts and would certainly be a great asset to anyone’s garage or collection.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
