1966 Velocette Thruxton 500cc

Highlights

  • Equipped with an aftermarket electric start system
  • Beautifully presented and in fantastic condition
  • 500cc OHV, air-cooled single-cylinder engine

The Appeal

Pushing the envelope of single-cylinder engine performance, Velocette took the successful Venom’s 500cc engine and equipped it with a new head containing bigger valves, modified cam followers and a downdraft Amal GP carburettor. Thus, the Thruxton was born, and we’re delighted to offer this lovely 1966 example.
With sleek lines accentuated by the black and gold colour scheme that’s synonymous with the Vellocette marque, the Thruxton is a very handsome machine. This 1966 example is presented beautifully and is in fantastic condition. The vendor points out that it has been fitted with a high quality aftermarket electric start system, which will be music to the ears of anyone who’s ever been brave enough to kick that big single over.

The History and Paperwork

  • An early Thruxton, made in 1966
  • V5C present
  • Retains its period logbook
  • Dispatched from the factor on 7th January 1966 to bike dealer Bannister of Chatham
  • A letter from the Thruxton Machine Register confirm this as an original Thruxton frame
  • The Thruxton Machine Register state that this bike’s gearbox shell has been changed but still sports a period-correct item
  • Accompanied by numerous invoices for parts and servicing
  • Exempt from MOT testing so we’re unable to verify the indicated mileage

The Condition

  • Gorgeous ‘café racer’ styling
  • Beautifully presented in fantastic condition
  • Distinctive paint scheme
You can alway spot a Velocette from that elegant black paintwork with gold script and pinstriping. This Thruxton is a particularly handsome machine that embraces the ever-popular ‘café racer’ aesthetic with a sizable cowl seat and drop handlebars.
Evidently, a great deal of care and attention have been lavished upon this Thruxton in recent years as it’s in really fine order. The paint looks really smart with a high quality finish and very few noticeable blemishes. The ‘Velocette’ script and distinctive gold pinstripe on the tank look to be in excellent condition and we couldn’t see any obvious dents in the fuel tank, oil reservoir or mudguards.
The frame appears really smart and without indication of damage or corrosion. The handlebars present well, as do the grips, controls and foot pegs. We particularly enjoy the period Smiths instrumentation which we understand to be in good working order.

The Mechanics

  • 500cc OHV, air-cooled single-cylinder engine
  • Right-foot shift, close ratio four-speed gearbox
  • Aftermarket electric start system
Benefitting from the aforementioned electric start system, the vendor informs us that this Velocette starts easily and runs very well. That big 500cc single thumps away strongly and we’re informs us that this bike rides and handles impeccably.
Capable of 110 mph in factory tune with excellent handling to match, the Thruxton was a brisk motorcycle in its day and it more than keeps up with modern traffic.

Summary

It’s hardly surprising that these Velocette Thruxtons are such desirable machines.
In lovely condition and with the benefit of electric start, this would be a fabulous bike to consider.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
