The Appeal

The VW Split Screen is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable vehicles, serving as a van, bus, or pickup. Its development journey began back in 1948, and by 1950, Volkswagen introduced the T1 for general sale. Initially named the "Transporter", the T1 earned its popularity due to its cost-effectiveness in terms of running and maintenance while also providing a place to live on the go.

In 1954, the Type 2 debuted, offering a diverse range of models tailored to different needs. These models included the panel van, double-door panel van, Kombi, Bus, Samba, flatbed, crew-cab, and more, much like this Campervan, which proves to be the perfect choice for a delightful weekend getaway, promising an abundance of fun and practicality!

The vendor purchased this 1966 split-screen in 2017 and sent it to the body shop, where the restoration was carried out. The project was completed in 2018, and further mechanical work was carried out in 2019. Since completion, the vendor has enjoyed many weekends out and about in the bus, which has only been taken out when the weather is dry.

The Interior

  • Full leather interior
  • Restored Devon furniture
  • Period features
  • Beautiful condition

Inside, this lovely split-screen is full of period features centering around the original Devon furniture. The furniture has been restored where necessary to its original condition, even going as far as sourcing the correct matching hinges on some of the cupboards.

The leather seat cushions have been retrimmed in the colour of Matador and are in excellent condition. Under one seat is an early Osokool fridge, which is in good order with no cracks.  A complete set of fitted curtains provides privacy, and Madmatz supplied the period-look chequer flooring. A gas cooker/grill is installed with the gas bottle stored in the cupboard below a charming set of Gaydon Melmex plates, cups, condiments & cutlery wallet, all mounted to the left-hand door.

The original Dudley cooker is also included, but this has not been tested. Sleeping arrangements are made up from the original table fitting between the bench seats and the cushions running lengthways, and there are also two hammocks included. Additional sockets have been fitted under the seats, including 12volt, USB and 240volt.

The front seats have been trimmed in matching leather, which are in excellent condition. The Aircooled Accessories steering wheel is in good order, and the gear lever has been upgraded to a Scat quick shift. The odometer has a reading of 59,230 miles and is working correctly. A period-looking head unit is fitted to the dashboard, but this has not been connected and is untested. The switchgear looks to be in good condition and is said to be working correctly. Keeping you cool is the original ventilation system, which is in good order, and the flooring has been fitted with Madmatz carpet.

The Exterior

  • Mango and Seagull Grey colour scheme
  • Safari front and side pop-out windows
  • Canterbury Pitt roof with 13mm red/white candy stripe canvas

The bus's exterior is in Seagull Grey over Mango, which is in excellent condition following a body restoration commissioned by the vendor when he purchased the split-screen.

Starting at the front of the bus, the front panel is nice and straight and free from any chips. The headlights and indicators are in good condition, and the safari windows open and close as they should and have a good seal thanks to the new rubbers fitted.

Looking down the sides of the split-screen, it is in excellent condition with no dings or dents, and the doors align straight with an equal gap. The windows are free from any noticeable scratches and, like the front, have had new seals fitted. The chrome door handles are in excellent condition with no pitting. The Canterbury Pitt roof has been finished with a 13mm red and white canvas.

The rear is also nice and straight, with the rear door and engine cover sitting straight and flush. The window is free from scratches and boasts several decals from various shows attended.

The wheels are finished in white to match the bumpers and are in excellent condition with a bright VW chrome hubcap.

The Mechanics

  • 1641cc Vege engine
  • Twin Weber ICT34 carburettors
  • Fireblaze suppression system
  • CSP front disc brake conversion

The engine fires up without hesitation, and there are no issues reported with the running of the bus. A high torque starter motor and flywheel are fitted, and a pair of Weber ICT34 carburettors with a cone air filter installed adds to the performance. The gearbox has a smooth change going up and down the gears.

On the road, the suspension gives a comfortable ride thanks to the independent rear suspension with adjustable spring plates and new dampers.

The braking system has been treated to a brake servo and dual circuit master cylinder, finishing with a CSP front brake disc conversion. The improved brakes bring the VW to a stop in a straight line.

Inside the engine bay, it presents really well; a Fireblaze suppression system has been installed, which has an automatic fuel cut-off solenoid. There is also a 240-volt socket for covenant electric hook-up whilst camping.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
