The Appeal
Where the MGB aimed to wow transatlantic buyers with aerodynamic styling, Rootes’ Alpine chose to ape the befinned styling beloved of our American cousins. Most went abroad, making these stylish and very capable cars a rare sight today, particularly compared to their Abingdon rival.
From 1965, the Series V introduced a new 1,725cc engine equipped with twin Strombergs. This ‘67 car is so equipped, but there is much more to it than the desirable spec. It has had just three previous keepers, two of them mother and daughter who retained the car in the family from 1967 to 2024. That provenance enables the vendor to verify the 37,000 miles from new.
The car was restored some years ago, including a switch from green to what DVLA describes as red but appears to be ‘Carnival Red.’ The body and interior remain in good order, being at the smart and usable end of the scale rather than concours. In 2023, it received a mechanical overhaul that is detailed in the photos and included a new clutch, master, and slave cylinders.
The vendor acquired the car in 2024 and has continued to invest in it. It was serviced by Midland Classic Restoration in 2025 and received four new tyres just before sale. He has also fitted a protective rollover hoop and installed Gaz adjustable shock absorbers that we are told transform the handling.
The car is naturally MOT exempt but comes with useful MOT history from 2006 to 2024. The last test in early 2023 contained no advisories. It has covered few miles since that visit.
The vendor says:
The car is a delight to drive, nice and tight on bends without being bone-jarring! Top up is practical, top down is really fun, and the engine sound makes you grin all the way. Pretty much every trip, some passerby has commented on the lovely car.
“I'm sad to see 'Lucy' go, but I have too many projects on to drive her enough. Plus, a 'Minimalistic Wife' has finally forced the sale!”
