The Appeal

This Sunbeam Imp was found by the current owner, who owns ‘Cromptons Restoration Services’, on top of a shipping container as a bare shell and a box of bits.

After completing all the work necessary to get this car back to its best (most definitely better than it was brand new) it is now offered up for sale to fund future work.
There have been no neglected areas during this restoration and it really is one of the best examples we have seen from a very talented restorer with plenty of experience in the trade.

The History and Paperwork

  • Current V5
  • Service receipts and work invoices from the late 90's
  • Owners manual
  • Original Sunbeam specification sheet
The car has a small stack of paperwork from a previous owner dated in the late 90's, they show various engine and carburettor work that the previous owner commissioned.

There is also the original Sunbeam owner's manual and specification sheet that must have come with the car from the factory.

Additionally there are various MOT documents and as can be seen in the photo gallery, a small stack of miscellaneous invoices, work and parts receipts. The car was clearly cared for prior to this owner and now after its professional restoration it's the best it probably has ever been.

The Interior

  • Black leather trim
  • Brand new, plush black carpet
  • Everything is working inside the cabin including electricals
The car is as close to brand new as you could get so it’s no surprise that the inside is in such fantastic condition.

The black leather seats are the originals and have been repaired rather than recovered to keep the car as original as possible. The steering wheel and gear lever are in fantastic condition with no wear on the lettering or chips in the wheel. The dash is a retro throwback to the 60’s style and is all working as intended.

The interior of the car is finished, like the rest of the car to a high standard and is a lovely place to be.

The Exterior

  • Lincoln green Metallic paint
  • Tight and uniform shut lines
  • Near flawless condition
Freshly painted in something green, the finish is top quality, and the paint has a metallic fleck in it that sparkles in the sunlight.

During the restoration, special attention was paid to the shut lines around the car, massaging the surrounding metal to ensure a tight and uniform fit was achieved. This now results in a car that not only looks superb but also has modern day levels of fit from the panels.
The wheels are the original steel wheels with chrome and hand painted black insert centre caps. The tyres are also the original tread pattern the car would have come with back in 1967 and one that suits the car perfectly. All chrome brightwork is in top condition too adding some extra shine to the already pretty exterior.

It really is a very high-quality job and one that looks even better in person.

The Mechanics

  • 875cc engine
  • RWD rear engined set up
  • Fully rebuilt in line with the high standards of the rest of the car
The Sunbeam’s 875cc unit has been given the same care and attention as the rest of the car and the owner prepares these engines regularly for other Imp owners so knows their way around the quirky slanted four cylinder stuffed into the boot.

This car is also a significant one in the Imp’s timeline as it is believed to be the first model of the car to switch over to a rear mounted servo instead of the front mounted ones, so it comes with that provenance too.

The engine has only seen 15 miles since its rebuild and the mileage in the dash has been reset to correspond with the rebirth of the rest of the car.

Summary

We think this Sunbeam is a really fantastic prospect and one that has demanded a huge amount of time, effort, finance and skill and execution from the owner.

We really do think that it could be described as better than new from our brief inspection, the owner has plenty of experience with these cars and this is surely the crowning jewel in their restoration repertoire.

This car could be used to pootle down to the shops as was its intended purpose or it could be used to win concourse shows, which we’re sure it would do with ease.

If you’re after the best Sunbeam Imp Sport in the country, we think you’ve just found it.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
