BACKGROUND

The Triumph TR4A is a well-known and loved British sports car. They were built in Coventry between 1964 and 1967 and were an evolution of the TR4, receiving many chassis revisions and, most importantly, independent rear suspension which made the TR4A a faster, tighter cornering, immeasurably improved road-holding, and a far smoother ride over uneven surfaces.
Power was increased to 110bhp using the famous 4-cylinder 2.2 litre Triumph engine which would get you to 50mph in 7.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 110mph. 
Further improvements included a 4-speed synchromesh gearbox with overdrive and large servo-assisted disc brakes up front. The TR4A also featured a truly convertible hood, which goes up and down simply, and in seconds. Other new features of the TR4A were door-to-door carpeting, improved bucket seats, a walnut-veneer dashboard, and two-speed wipers.

HISTORY 

The current owner has enjoyed this car for around 8 years. Previous to acquiring the car it had been subject to an earlier mechanical restoration in the early 2000’s of the full engine and gearbox.
In 2015, a full interior restoration was undertaken to include the leather bucket seats, the walnut veneer dashboard, and various other bits of trim that were needed to make it look as good as it does today.
The rear wings have been replaced with fiberglass panels due to normal rusting issues, and, as well as being maintenance free, they provide a handy weight reduction which improves performance and fuel economy.
During the last 8 years of ownership the current owner has enjoyed using the car as much as possible, making many memorable, for all the right reasons, trips across Europe and to Le Mans 24 Classic events.
The car has always been well cared for during his 8-year ownership, being dry stored over the winter months and only being driven in the dry. During this time, it has proved to be totally reliable with no issues arising or being worthy of note.

 PAPERWORK

The V5c is present and correct along with a large file of receipts and MOT certificates to support various works done over the years.

 INTERIOR

With its recent refit the interior looks fantastic. The red leather seats with white piping are in great condition and totally look the part, providing a lovely contrast to the white exterior. The beautiful wooden steering wheel is also an absolute delight.
All the gauges and switches work as they should although there is a bit of minor finishing-off to be done. The driver’s side window winder handle is missing, and the radio requires the aerial to be connected. The radio is new and looks identical to the original but has the benefit of supporting mobile phone connection. The under-dash wires need a bit of tidying up and that’s about it.

 EXTERIOR

Overall, the exterior is in great shape and condition for a 54-year-old car and looks fabulous with its striking white paintwork, sparkling wire wheels and contrasting black hood.
There are a few blemishes and areas that might require some attention on the bodywork but nothing major. The side sills look like they might need some TLC but there are no obvious or blatant issues or concerns. The chrome fittings all look good, as do all the rubber seals.  The underneath has been wax-oiled to provide long-term protection.
The hood works easily, and the plastic rear window shows no sign of discolouration or fogging.

MECHANICS

The car has the benefit of having had a full engine and gearbox rebuild. In addition, over the years the car has had various new components fitted, a new clutch and master cylinder, a new radiator, oil-pump and, to aid cooling, an electric Kenlowe fan. It also has a stainless-steel twin exhaust and all electrics are functioning, as they should do.
The car starts well and idles nicely and the gearbox and Overdrives work perfectly and smoothly.
The tyres all look good and it has had regular oil and filter changes and routine maintenance over the years as required.

 THE APPEAL

If you’ve been looking for an early Triumph open top sports car then the TR4A, with its subtle suspension, performance and luxury improvements over its predecessor really should tick a lot of your boxes.
This is a lovely original car in a fabulous colour combination with the specified optional extras of those great looking wire wheels and a very useful Overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears.
Most certainly an appreciating classic that is truly usable and a delight to drive, the TR4A is surprisingly practical having a spacious, comfortable cabin and useful boot space for those longer motoring adventures and weekends away.
With this particular example looking and driving the way it does it should attract a lot of interested bidders, safe in the knowledge that any investment made now is very unlikely to do anything but increase in value in the years to come.
