The Appeal
It may have been developed as a pretty Michelotti-penned alternative to the Austin Healey and MGB, but the TR4 found its true calling as a serious giant killer on the world’s rally and race tracks. The IRS’ semi-trailing arm system cemented that reputation by absorbing bumps and maintaining wheel contact on loose and broken surfaces.
Those qualities explain why the IRS remains such a popular choice for touring and track events. Likely that the thinking when this car underwent its extensive second restoration in 1997 - the first was in 1986 - including mechanical upgrades. The car sports a de-bumpered rally look with polybushed suspension, wing vents, Safety Devices roll cage and Luke harnesses, but we’re told it has never been used in competition. Its CTC chassis prefix confirms it as a genuine ‘IRS’ factory car. Just 10% (3,075) of TR4A IRS cars were home market models and this is one of them.
The vendor is the car’s fifth keeper and acquired it in 2007. It has since been used sparingly, with maintenance entrusted to the team at Haynes Heritage Garage. 2018 saw the car receive extensive engine work. It is a mark of the seller’s approach that despite being MOT exempt, it has been regularly tested, with the current one running to October 2026 with no advisories.
This is a very tidy and well-presented example of the rare ‘Surrey Top’ model, supplied with hard and soft top roofs.
