The History

The Ford Mustang was an immediate hit with the motoring public and is probably one of the most recognised American muscle cars ever produced. Within 18 months of launch Ford had sold over 1 million units, vastly exceeding all sales and production forecasts.

Initially launched by Ford in April 1964 the original offering featured an in-line 6 cylinder engine but by 1966 the 289 cubic inch V8 was an option and in this guise it produced a useful 200 BHP.

The Background

Made in the favoured San Jose factory in 1968, with original factory options that include power steering, front disc brakes and aircon (now needing to be recharged) two sisters in California bought this 289 Mustang Coupe and used it daily to commute from home to their convenience store a few miles away.

After 33 years of light use the car was eventually dry stored in 2001 before being imported into the UK in 2017.

The US mileage was verified before importation and upon arrival it was treated to a full inspection and re-commissioning before registering it in the UK and being sold to its second and current owner.

The electrics were updated and halogen headlights were fitted along with changing all the oils and fluids. Bushes were replaced and brakes were renovated but other than this, the car required little work having been regularly maintained and cared for by the two sisters.

Since purchase the current owner has used the car infrequently but has regularly turned over the engine while being kept warm and dry in his garage.

Storage space has now become an issue and he is now reluctantly offering the car up for auction.

The Paperwork

The UK V5 shows one previous owner, and in the glove box you’ll find the original owner’s manual. Paperwork includes the all important Marti report showing the original factory spec.

There are also numerous receipts from the original owners detailing routine maintenance and various works and repairs undertaken in California.

The current MOT expires shortly in August 2021, but the owner has agreed to provide a new MOT upon successful completion of the sale.

The Interior

The black original interior is in fairly good shape for its age and would benefit from some deep cleaning and polishing to help refresh and rejuvenate the dashboard and various bits of trim.

The rear seats are in particularly good condition and although the front seats have their problems the car is supplied with a brand-new set of seat covers that the current owner never got round to fitting.

The carpets are threadbare in places and there is a small piece missing from the steering wheel but the headlining looks clean with no signs of sagging or staining. The seller hasn't changed these or the seats as to keep the originality of the Mustang.

The dashboard is complete with no cracks and the door panels are free from any damage or tears

The instruments and the original stereo all work, except for the clock and all the chrome has an aged patina to it.

The Exterior

Finished in Meadowlark Yellow with its original wheels fitted with whitewall tyres the stylish lines of this Mustang create a very pretty picture.

Having spent most of its life in the dry state of California and at some time being treated to a re-spray in its original colour the body looks pretty good although it is beginning to show signs of ageing around the bottom of the doors and the right-hand A pillar looks like it needs some cosmetic attention.

There are a few stone chips that have been touched up and some paint imperfections on the edge of the bonnet where it looks to have been damaged slightly and touched up.

All of the exterior chrome and window surrounds have pitting to one degree or another. They are all believed to be original fittings so the pitting is to be expected on a car of this age and it is a matter of personal taste as to whether this is an area of concern or acceptance.

The rear reversing light lenses have some cracking but all other glass and lights look clear and are without chips or cracks.

The Mechanics

Since acquiring the vehicle the current owner has done very few miles but reports no known mechanical issues except for the fact that the air conditioning is not working.

It starts and drives well and of course that V8 engine produces a satisfying and intoxicating soundtrack.

It is thought that the fuel tank was replaced whilst in the USA but other than that and routine maintenance and replacing parts that are subject to wear and tear the car remains in a nice all-round original condition.

The Appeal

The first generation Ford Mustang will remain a firm favourite with car enthusiasts the world over.

It represents a time when V8 muscle cars were the new best thing and the iconic Mustang is a car that will never go out of fashion and there will always be a strong demand for them, especially the early V8’s.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
