The Appeal
By the mid 1980s, Jaguar's excellent XK engine was getting rather long in the tooth. A new straight-six was needed; initially conceived as a four-valve conversion of the old XK block, it evolved into an entirely new design sharing bore spacing with the Jaguar V12. Designed to meet stringent emissions and modern efficiency standards, the 430-lb AJ6 engine featured an aluminium block, dual overhead cams, and four valves per cylinder. It proved to be an excellent powerplant.
That brings us on to this Jaguar 420. The model was produced for just two years between 1966 and 1968, and represented the top of Jaguar's compact saloon range, pairing the refined lines of the S-Type with the four-headlamp front end of the Mark X. Fewer than 10,000 were built, and survivors are an increasingly uncommon sight.
Our car has been significantly upgraded with mechanical and interior components believed to be sourced from a Jaguar XJS, including an AJ6 4.0-litre electronically fuel-injected engine, ABS braking, power steering, and XJS interior trim. An LPG conversion has also been fitted for dual-fuel capability. The vendor has driven the car and reports that it drives like a modern vehicle.
