1968 MGC Roadster Automatic

Highlights

  • Lots of history
  • One family owned for the majority of its life
  • Low miles
  • Very original condition

The Background

The MG MGC is a very interesting beast, the combination of shoehorning in a massive new BMC engine, the C-series OHV seven-bearing straight-six, packing 2,912 cc and twin-SU carburettors, into the MGB shell, with a coupe-convertible roof.

This one has the optional 3 speed automatic transmission which is well suited to the torquey 3 Litre engine. Having a production run of only 4500 between 67-69 the automatic is a rarity with very few examples rumoured to still exist. It is a good looking car with a powerful engine and certainly has some rarity about the bodywork.

The History

A very very original car with tons of history, this car has been in the same family since 1974 and was owned and used by the vendors mother for years. Every MOT certificate is there, every single receipt for all the work ever done on the vehicle is present, including the original payment cheque for its purchase by the current keepers family which is a lovely addition!

Clearly the family have loved and used this car and have made sure to document and detail its life and history.  Loads of paperwork including an original workshop manual. This car has had no expense spared and thousands have been spent over the years. It was treated to a full body respray in 1991, with further part body paintwork carried out in 2005 It has had touch ups and areas done as needed since.

It is a very original car with a lovely back story being owned by one family pretty much its whole life.

The Paperwork

V5 is present, loads of paperwork is included including a workshop manual, all of its MOT certificates through the years and receipts for all the work and servicing it has ever had done, an incredible amount of paperwork and history here including the receipt of purchase and a copy of the cheque. The car currently has an MOT which expires on the 22nd of June 2022. It is of course eligible for MOT exemption so if the new owner choses not to renew the MOT it can be registered quite simply with the DVLA as exempt.

The Interior

The interior is completely original, black on black with chrome trims and leather seats with white piping on the door cards and seats to match the exterior bodywork. It retains a wonderful original feel, everything works including the radio and even  the little map lamps which are a nice touch!

It also has some interesting aftermarket features including a Beltek cassette hifi player with Beltek Magna sound speakers and all the speakers work. Everything for the most part in really nice original fully working condition. The driver's seat is the only negative point which could do with a restoration as it has seen better days. Besides that a lovely original interior, showing off its patina proudly.

The Exterior

Exterior is white with chrome trims and the iconic black MGC coupe-convertible hardtop. The paint is in overall good condition, with a few areas that could do with some attention due to some rust starting to show through around the headlights.

It features knock-off fitment wire wheels. Light lenses are all clear and clean. Overall a very original feeling car which would not take much TLC to really take its condition to the next level.

There is also a soft top conversion unit and tonneau cover included in the sale.

The Mechanics

Mechanically in good shape, everything works and everything is very original. The 3L C-series OHV seven-bearing straight-six, is unmolested and original, having never been rebuilt. And the automatic gearbox is also original and moves up and down the gears as it should.

No expense has been spared on servicing and maintenance and when the car has needed repair it has got what has been needed. This combined with the low milage for its age brings a car which is very mechanically sound. Underbody could also benefit from some TLC. Under the bonnet is not the cleanest however this should not detract from the fact that the car has been well maintained.

The vendor reports that the odometer stopped working a couple of weeks ago, he has had this diagnosed as needing a replacement drive angle on the gearbox but has run out of time to source and have fitted.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
