1969 Alfa Romeo 1750 Spider Veloce Duetto

Highlights

  • Stunning Boattail Alfa Spider
  • Very rare RHD example – one of 200
  • Full restoration, few miles covered since

The Appeal

The Alfa Romeo Spider is certainly an emblem of relaxed Italian motoring under the sun. But produced in very few numbers, the stunning boattail version of the car is even more of a desirable model to those passionate about Italian motoring history.

This particular car may have passed through 10 owners since leaving the factory in 1969, but following an extensive restoration and having covered just 27,000 miles in its lifetime, it is certainly a gorgeous example of the already stunning car.

A rarity in right-hand drive layout, very seldom does a model of this calibre appear on the market. Any collector will surely be very pleased to get their hands on such a unique offering.

The Interior

  • Fully retrimmed
  • Looks factory fresh
  • Very traditional specification

Inside this rare drop-top Italian sports car sits a very typical cabin. Indeed, the black leather seats, door cards and dashboard top complimented by the body-colour dash and wood-rim steering wheel is something one sees inside most models of its era. What is not so usual however is this car’s near-flawless condition.

In fact, during the full restoration, undertaken by a renowned restorer between 2008 and 2017, this interior was fully reupholstered with new material. Having been used exceptionally rarely since, the cockpit still presents in a fabulous condition. Indeed, the seats appear untouched whilst the wood trim on the steering wheel shines brilliantly.

Alfa Romeo embroidered carpets and elegant chrome fixtures throughout complete this open-top cockpit specification.

Meanwhile, the boot appears to be equally well maintained. Under the floor sits the spare wheel whilst the original jack is also present with the car.

There is some minor and delightful patina to be found on the dials across the dash. The owner decided to temporarily keep the ‘as was fitted’ modern Sony head, to bring a level of additional entertainment to a two-week trip round Italy he took off on, almost immediately after buying the car. A trip, during which the locals were said to have applauded the car as it drove through the villages. He had always planned to remove this unit as part of the restoration, but having enjoyed the musical accompaniment so much, opted to have it put back in.

The Exterior

  • Stunning boattail styling
  • Paintwork presents wonderfully
A 1969 car, this Alfa Romeo Spider benefits from being one of the last models of the Series 1, baring the eye-catching boattail rear end. Inspired by the S3000 CM Superflow concept, the model attracts Alfa Romeo enthusiasts for its exceptional looks.

Following its extensive restoration, this car shows off those special lines in a jaw-dropping way. Indeed, the bodywork all looks very straight and clean, finished in a brilliant and truly deep coat of red paint, applied by a true expert towards the end of its restoration.

Elsewhere, the black fabric hood appears to be in great condition. Folding away with ease, it shows very few evident creases. Furthermore, the chrome fixtures throughout including bumpers, light surrounds and badges all look great. The same can be said for the wheels and their chrome hub caps.

As one would expect from a car so recently restored and kept in a protecting bubble, the underside looks very clean.

The Mechanics

  • 1.8-litre twin-cam inline-four, 116hp
  • Strong unit, pulls well in all gears
  • Very few miles in recent years

Baring the 1750 nameplate, this Series 1 Alfa Romeo Spider is powered by a 1.8-litre four-pot putting out 116hp along with a fabulous twin-cam song. Indeed, these lovely Italian models provide a great tune from under the bonnet.

Thanks to great care, the car presents in wonderful shape mechanically. The owner states that it pulls well in all gears meaning plenty of enjoyment behind the wheel. Indeed, not only has the car undergone a thorough restoration, it has also covered very few miles after emerging from said work.

There is a reported whine coming from the differential. The owner confirms a replacement may be in order, but it does not intrude on the driving experience.

Summary

Having been meticulously restored and used very little since, this one of 200 right-hand drive Boattail Alfa Romeo Spider presents in stunning condition. Looking almost untouched both inside and out as well as running almost perfectly, the owner claims this car could easily present in concours condition with a few minor fixes.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
