The Appeal

This fine MG C GT is the successor to the MG B models, and brought in a redesigned version of the fine 3L i6 from the Austin-Healey 3000. The new engine design reduced the weight and incorporated a seven-bearing crankshaft (instead of four), and twin SU HS6 carburettors. This model however saw limited success in Europe, with a lot of owners finding the much heavier engine negatively impacted handling.

This stunning example has had work carried out to address these issues and is not a totally changed machine, really what the MG C should have been from the beginning. A truly excellent job carried out by this discerning keeper to preserve the feel of this vehicle while making some excellent upgrades to the way the car functions as a package.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vehicle was imported to France from California in 2001, and had 2 owners previously in the USA.
  • The Speedometer has been replaced with a kmh version upon import to France and mileage reset with this change. The previous mileage is unknown.
  • Some MG C booklets and some parts books are present.
  • Overhaul carried out in 2002 including full respray and has documentation detailing the work carried out.
  • All invoices for subsequent repairs and services are also included in the comprehensive history file for this car.

The Interior

  • This very nice interior packs a very sporty feel and is finished in black leather with body colour matched blue piping.
  • Upon opening the doors, it is obvious that this car has been very well cared for, the door cards themselves are clean and tidy, and have no obvious signs of damage or blemishes. Everything works as it should.
  • On the passenger side of the vehicle, and as a very nice addition indeed, available with the car is a Retrotrip distance counter for precise km counting on road rallies, adding even more to the sporty feel of this fine car.
  • There is also a navigator's map reading lamp mounted on the door pillar, clearly this car has a fantastic background of road rallies and is prepared and ready to go for more sporting activities with its new keeper.
  • Moving along to the drivers side, a beautiful wood rim steering wheel with metal riveting details and the spokes polished to a wonderful lustre, finished with a black centre cap and MG emblem.
  • Nestled behind the wheel are excellent smiths gauges in great condition.
  • Being a left hand drive model, to the right we have a very nice shift lever in chrome with black knob, with the rubber gaiter in good condition and a silver handbrake lever.
  • Moving rearward the boot is clean and tidy and under the floor a full size spare and tools reside.
  • A truly superb example all-round.

The Exterior

  • The exterior of this well-refined sports car is finished in a fresh, stunning blue respray carried out to a very high standard in 2002 with white racing stripes (painted) adding to the sporty feel.
  • All of the exterior glass and lamp lenses are clear and clean and free of damage or major blemishes.
  • Adorning the front end are a pair of brilliant-looking rally driving lamps and red front tow hook, these further evoke the feel of classic sports car driving.
  • Decal number plates keep the car's lines clean and help to keep aerodynamic drag to a minimum.
  • The wire spoked centre-lock wheels are in very good condition and shod with Yokohama tyres, they really suit this fine machine and complete the overall look of the car.
  • All of the brightwork is clean and looking very fresh and well polished.
  • Overall, this wonderful MG C GT has been finished in a very tasteful way, evoking the feel of classic motorsport and augmenting the original spirit of the car.

The Mechanics

  • Mechanically this car has had no expense spared in its upkeep and also on a very nice selection of upgrades that have transformed the car’s handling and driving experience and really resolved any issues the heavier 3L i6 engine may have caused.
  • These modifications include replacement steering, upgraded front suspension and (to allow the engine to breathe) a six-branch manifold and twin exhaust.
  • Further to this, the clutch has been replaced and a lighter, balanced flywheel fitted. At the same time electronic ignition and thermostatic cooling was installed.
  • That wonderful 3L engine sings, and starts up and runs perfectly, and provides a very nice 150bhp at 5250 rpm
  • That punchy engine is mated to a 4 speed manual gearbox with overdrive 3rd and 4th gears
  • The excellent condition continues under the body with almost no corrosion being present, a very well maintained vehicle indeed.

Summary

A truly fantastic example, you will be hard pressed to find a better MG C GT. A rare opportunity to own a vehicle that this discerning keeper has clearly worked very hard to improve and preserve, with the car handling better than factory, with the song of that sublime inline 6 engine and a nod toward classic motorsport in the looks department.
An exceptional car not to be missed.
