1970 Fiat 124 Spider

Highlights

  • RHD conversion
  • Comprehensive restoration completed in 1997
  • Resprayed, retrimmed, mechanically overhauled

The Appeal

There’s no denying that Fiat’s 124 Spider is stunningly beautiful. Just take a minute to enjoy its well-sculpted lines and confident stance.
This particular example has been imported to the UK, converted to right hand drive and restored. Finished in a very tasteful shade of ‘Ferrari Dino Blue’, it still looks smart and sharp and will certainly make its next owner proud.

The History and Paperwork

  • Manufactured in 1970
  • Imported to the UK in 1990
  • Converted to right hand drive
  • Current owner since 2016
  • MoT and Road Tax exempt

The Interior

  • Retrimmed interior
  • Tan leather in good clean condition
  • Radio/CD player fitted
  • Carpets replaced
The interior of this 124 Spider is a place of minimalist charm and elegance.

The simple veneered dashboard holds just enough gauges to give the driver all the essential information. The doors are artfully uncluttered and the tan upholstery is stylish throughout.

It remains in great condition, having evidently been used with care and respect. Even the quilted leather inside the glovebox is very clean.
When the car was restored in 1997, the interior was treated to retrimmed seats, new wool carpets and a new dashboard as part of the conversion to right hand drive. The owner also specified a Fiat Spider 2000 steering wheel to be fitted.
All the fittings are said to be in fully working order. And the car benefits from the addition of a more modern stereo CD player. The only reported issue is some damage to the central gearstick surround.
To the rear, the boot is in good clean condition, and the spare wheel and jack are stowed neatly below the floor.

The Exterior

  • Smart ‘Ferrari Dino Blue’ paint in great condition
  • Chrome clean and well polished
  • Clean underneath
The accompanying documentation states that the car was resprayed in 1997 in ‘Ferrari Dino Blue’ and we think this colour absolutely suits this Fiat. It remains deeply lustrous and smart.
A few blemishes have been picked up over the past 25 years, including a small, almost invisible, dink to the front of the bonnet and a small scratch to the edge of the driver’s door. But overall, the paintwork is very smart and presentable.
The chrome trim is clean and in good condition and the ‘biscuit’ soft top (new in 1997) remains clean and tight. And the wheels appear to be clean and free from scratches, with plenty of tread left on the tyres.
Underneath, there seems to be a minimal amount of surface corrosion, with no obvious major issues. The owner had this Fiat waxed underneath upon purchase.

All required welding was carried out during restoration.

The Mechanics

  • 1600 engine fitted in 1997
  • Fully mechanically overhauled
The Fiat twin-cam engine was fitted to many models throughout its long lifetime.

A refurbished 1600 unit was fitted during the 1997 restoration, along with a new clutch and brake overhaul.
This 124 Spider is said to still be running exactly as it should, pulling well, accelerating strongly and stopping confidently. During the restoration a new exhaust was fitted, which still sounds throaty as it should do.
In all, this is a peppy little car which would be great fun on a summer afternoon run to the pub, or equally at home on twisting Alpine switchbacks.

Summary

The Pininfarina-designed 124 Spider is a fantastic example of how the Italians can make absolutely anything look stylish and classy.

Its understated silhouette is enhanced by just the right number of flourishes, like the twin bonnet bulges or the strikingly simple chrome bumpers.

This particular car offers a chance to acquire a right hand drive example, which has received a huge amount of care and attention during an older restoration, but still looks smart today.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
