The Appeal
Few cars hold such universal appeal as the Fiat ‘Nuova 500’, which became one of the world’s first city cars when it was launched in 1957. It quickly became a hit, thanks to its diminutive size (less than three meters long), surprisingly spacious cabin, low running costs and cheeky looks. Over time, the car gained a little more equipment, culminating in the 500L (Lusso). Sporty models produced by Abarth proved popular and successful on the racetrack.
This left-hand drive 500L dates from 1970, towards the end of the famous model’s life. It is believed to have been originally registered in Italy, where it was fully restored around 2015 and given an Abarth makeover, turning it into a tribute to the Abarth 595S. The car was registered in the UK in 2016 and purchased by the seller the following year.
The white exterior features the red ‘Abarth’ stripes and Abarth scorpion badges on its sides, as well as front and rear Abarth badges and ‘595S’ scripts. Wider wheels have been fitted, and the original bumper overriders removed. The interior has also received the 595S treatment, with a four-dial instrument binnacle, thick-rimmed steering wheel, sportier seats and drilled gear lever with Abarth gear knob.
The car has not been used since 2022; the seller describes the body as being very sound; some rust is visible underneath. The car’s original fabric roof remains, meaning that open-top motoring can be enjoyed in brighter weather.
The seller states: “As a fun family vehicle, it's amazing. People love it and you make new friends wherever you go. It’s surprising that you can fit four people in!”
