1971 Ford Escort 1600 GT

Highlights

  • Desirable 2-door in GT specification
  • Very sound body shell which may have been replaced in the past
  • Beautifully presented both inside and out

The Appeal

We’ll wager that most British families will have memories involving Ford Escorts. A car that has played an integral part in the lives of literally millions of people, the Escort is a sociocultural icon and early examples are highly prized by collectors and the nostalgic alike.
Dynamically, there’s a real purity to Mark 1 Escorts which have been known to navigate rally stages as competently as they went about their business as family cars to the masses. Here we have a charming example of a late Mark 1 1600 GT. Presented in fantastic order both mechanically and cosmetically, this plucky little fast Ford is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor believes this example was re-shelled at some point; the V5C shows the model as 'Mexico II' but we are unable to verify that it has a fully matching specification
  • It has been repainted and generally refinished to a high standard
  • Exempt from MOT and road tax due to age

The Interior

  • Very original with no modifications reported by the vendor
  • Desirable 6-dial instrument cluster
  • Period Springalex sports steering wheel
  • Factory-fit blue vinyl seats are in very good order with little wear to report
  • Rear bench seat looks to have hardly been used
  • The door cards also present well and the windows raise and lower as they should
  • Throughout the cabin and boot, the carpeting presents really well and is eminently serviceable
  • We couldn’t see any UV damage to the dashboard which is in great shape
  • There is very little wear evident on any of the controls

The Exterior

  • Pale blue paintwork complements the interior colour scheme
  • Really smart and clean underneath with no signs of corrosion or evidence of leaks
  • There are of course a few small blemishes but the paint is generally really fine
  • The chrome appears undamaged and without pitting
  • All of the badges and other trims look to be complete and in fine shape
  • We couldn’t see any significant marks on the glass or light lenses
  • It sits upon period sports wheels which really suit the car
  • The vendor informs us that the tyres retain plenty of tread

The Mechanics

  • 1600cc 4-cylinder engine
  • Under the bonnet, the mechanicals are really well presented and there is no grime or evidence of leaks
  • We’re informed that it starts, runs and drives without fault and is really rewarding
  • The rear axle and associated running gear appears in great order and free from corrosion
  • The suspension too is free from rust and functions as it should

Summary

Here we have a really fine example of the coveted Mark 1 Ford Escort 160 GT. For fans of the blue oval, of which there are many, this is a must have and we’re sure it will cause quite a stir amongst the fast Ford community.
Seldom do we see these Escorts in standard roadgoing trim and for many this example represents a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era. If you love this Escort as much as we do, you simply must consider adding it to your collection.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
