For those who liked to make camp a little off the beaten track, there were several period camper conversions for Series Land Rovers, most notably including Martin Walter Dormobile and a company called Searle, based in Sunbury-on-Thames. The Searle Carawagon featured a unique wood and metal folding roof, which provides over six feet of standing headroom in the centre of the vehicle when raised. Sleeping arrangements included rear bench seats that convert into a double bed, while some models allowed for up to four berths, including roof-mounted hammock beds. Kitchen facilities included a gas hob (often a 2-burner stove with a broiler) and a built-in sink with a manual hand-pump faucet.
It proved to be a versatile camper, and the British Armed Forces even utilised camouflaged Carawagon as a “Tactical Command Posts”. Surviving examples are rare, and most have since lost their original interiors. That makes our 1971 Series IIA 109" very special indeed.
Our Land Rover presents with honest, original character and age-related patina consistent with an unrestored vehicle. It has been kept under cover for a considerable period, helping to preserve its condition. The vendor states it drives very well, and recent service work has been carried out with supporting paperwork.
For those seeking an authentic, usable Carawagon in highly original order, you simply cannot afford to miss this wonderful opportunity.DSC03479 Lewis Foord.jpg1.1 MB
