The Appeal

It’s a measure of how right the original Land Rover design was that it barely evolved in its first few decades of manufacturing. By the time the Series III started rolling off the production line in 1971, it was still instantly recognisable, with proven design elements that in some cases had barely changed since the late Forties.

Having recently been inherited by the son of its former owner, this much-loved Series III Land Rover is presented to market in near-original condition. After 54 years of service, the LWB bodywork needs attention, from a dent on the passenger rear wing to tarnished chromework and bubbling along the bottom of the doors. However, this is an unmodified car where everything from the door hinges to the metal dashboard has been carefully preserved. The toggle switches still display their original pictorial symbols, and the manufacturer plaque still proudly proclaims “Solihull Warwickshire England”.

The paintwork needs restoration, whereas the wheels appear to be original and in good condition, though the bonnet-mounted spare has been relocated to the rear. This particular model appears to be original other than a few details – the addition of a Rover badge and some contemporary external lighting, for example – which could easily be removed.

Inside, aftermarket speakers are powered by a modern CD stereo system below a VDO clock and Smiths voltmeter, while the fabrics and materials all appear period. Many surfaces will need restoring and refurbishing, but opportunities to buy a long-wheelbase Series III in such time-capsule condition are extremely rare, particularly given its remarkably low recorded mileage. Having covered just 40,000 miles from new, it’s now nicely run in and ready for its next adventure.
