The Appeal
Porsche’s 911 has long been recognised as the epitome of a true driver’s car. And the models from the early and mid 1970s are particularly sought after and collectible.
This example has been with its current owner since 1996 and we’re told that it has undergone a respray and a complete engine rebuild during this time.

Replete with what is believed to be its original interior, the cabin of this 911 is a fine period example.
The vinyl all looks to be in very good condition, with some signs of wear and use commensurate with the age of the vehicle. However, we couldn’t see any significant wear or tears in the material.

The driving environment of these earlier 911s is very simple, and all the better for it. With the classic 5-dial layout telling the driver everything they need to know and nothing more, there are few distractions.
All of the controls and instruments appear in fine order, with some light age-related wear, but no damage we could see.

Grey carpets run through the cabin and front luggage area. It all appears to be in fair condition, with some areas of wear and some light damage, but nothing we would consider severe.
Likewise, the vinyl door cards are showing some wear, and there is some damage to the driver’s side door card, but overall they’re in reasonable condition.

The headlining of the targa panel is ribbed black vinyl. It looks to be secure and undamaged - there’s a little rippling to the material, but no sagging we could discern.
The rest of the interior trim looks to be present and correct, while period parcel-shelf mounted speakers have been fitted in the rear and there is a full-size spare wheel present in the front boot.

We’re told by the vendor that the car was resprayed professionally in 1999, and the sunny yellow finish certainly makes for a very eye-catching vehicle.
The body panels themselves look to be straight and in reasonably good order, with no notable damage or corrosion evident. There are some issues with the paintwork - cracks, chips, blemishes and some overspray are clearly visible in a number of areas.
Also, at some point in the vehicle’s history, the original engine cover and bumpers have been replaced with mid 70s items, including the iconic whale tail.

As far as we can tell, all of the external badging and trim is present. There is some wear and fading evident to the badge on the bonnet, but otherwise it all appears to be in above average condition.
We noted that many of the seals and rubbers look to be cracking and dried out, so would probably benefit from being replaced.

The targa panel itself is trimmed in black vinyl that presents nicely, with no signs of UV damage or tears. Likewise, the polished metal rollover hoop adds a nice flourish to the external design and looks to be in good order.
The car rides on original 15” Fuchs wheels, which have been resprayed black and have a polished metal lip. Overall they are in average condition, with a few dings to the lips and some marks and blemishes to the faces.
Underneath, the car looks to be in very good order. It appears to be very clean and straight, with no evidence of damage or corrosion we could see. We think the car has been repainted and undersealed at some point, which along with the fact it has been dry stored for 20+ years, has clearly done much to preserve the vehicle’s structure.
The Mechanics

With that charismatic flat-6 air-cooled engine (known in Porsche circles as the “2.4L”) and a manual transmission, this charming sports car provides all manner of driving thrills.
The owner tells us that the engine was completely rebuilt in 1999 and that they have had a new CDI unit fitted this year.

The vendor tells us that the car runs well, with no mechanical issues, leaks, smoke or untoward noises or vibrations.
Summary
Presented in a desirable specification, with the more powerful ‘2.4’ S engine and a targa roof, this 911 would make a fantastically usable everyday classic.
