The Appeal

Rolls-Royce’s switch to unitary body construction suited the goal of making the Silver Shadow a car for owner-drivers. This thoroughly modern new model aimed to attract a new type of buyer, perhaps one not equipped with a title, with much-improved levels of comfort and handling.

Those qualities explain why the Silver Shadow’s engineering underpinned the firm’s models for decades and also its enduring appeal with enthusiasts. For marque enthusiasts, it is the pretty chrome bumper ‘Shadow I’ cars that carry growing appeal thanks to their ‘purer’ iteration of John Blatchley’s clever design. Of those cars, the larger-engined 6,750cc model, introduced in 1970, is particularly desirable.

This early 6.75L chrome bumper car is a proper find. It is a low-mileage and seemingly very original car that has been with the current keeper since 1992. We’re told that he has always garaged it. It is a smartly finished car in generally well-kept silver metallic with an optional black Everflex roof and preserved grey and black leather cabin. There are a few paintwork points to note, but the photos suggest they don’t overly detract from its usability and appeal.

This is the kind of well-specified Shadow that you could use ‘as is’ or gradually improve. Whichever you choose, we wish it well with its first new keeper in four decades.
