The Appeal
The Porsche 718-RSK Spyder is the culmination of years of refinement and development of small displacement power through the harsh and unforgiving proving ground of motorsport.
However, Porsche only produced 34 Spyder 718-RSKs, so you’d think that the opportunity to own one would be super rare and you have to have a few million lying around to be in with the chance of even bidding for one.
Well, it seems that others thought the same as replicas started to pop up with the same ethos but build with more readily available parts.
Spyders Inc is such a company that dedicates itself to the production of these fabulous looking replicas and if their reputation is anything to go by then they are also fabulous in the build quality department.

Whether built at home or in the factory, these replicas are highly regarded and Spyders Inc have had a few years of development themselves under their belt.
Either built using the VW Beetle chassis with a rear engined layout or their own in-house tubular space frame mid-engined layout, they use a mould from an original car which means the dimensions are spot on and it's as close as you can get to the real thing without breaking the bank.
Built by Porsche Spyder Inc specialist Rob Lindsay in 2003, this 718 RSK is the perfect way to enjoy the RSK ambience on a much more realistic budget.

The History and Paperwork
- MOT’d until August 2023
- V5C in seller’s name
- Pile of invoices and receipts
The Interior
- Red leather interior
- Black faced dials with green lettering
- Wood rimmed Moto Lita steering wheel
The interior of the car is a fantastic thing to behold, the red leather really giving the car an evocative edge subtly matching the small red highlights from the exterior of the car such as the indicators and rear lights.
The door cards are wonderfully simple and keep in theme with the rest of the interior with the chrome door fixings and the silver harnesses to match the exterior colour.
The dials are a nice touch too with black faced gauges with a ‘glow in the dark’ style green lettering, set against the body colour dash.
For some safety, 4-point harnesses are present on each seat and adding some aesthetic appeal are billet aluminium knobs and switches and a push button starter.
The pioneer radio head unit is subtly mounted and gives the driver a great source of audio.

The Exterior
- Beautifully presented in a fantastic colour scheme
- High levels of build quality with parts from Spyders Inc
- Wheels in good condition
The exterior of the Spyder is just as striking and holds as much presence as the real thing, the paint work on this example is in great condition with a lower amount of wear and tear than you’d expect from a car with just over 7000 miles.
The car is also adorned with some lovely features, such as the alloy fuel filler cap, luggage box under rear body section, and low Perspex screens as per the original racers. It also boasts original Porsche badging including 'Wendler' coachbuilder's badges and 'Nürburgring' plaque on the driver's side. The car is appropriately finished in silver with red leather interior, the latter featuring a MotoLita wood-rim steering wheel.

The wheels and tyres are in great condition providing yet more evidence that this car has been well looked after during its time.
All the shut lines, bodywork and fixings and fittings give the impression of a high-quality replica build which is testament to the engineering of Spyders Inc.

The Mechanics
- 2.2 litre engine
- Centre exit exhaust
The Spyder is powered by an air-cooled 2.2-litre Volkswagen engine incorporating a counterweighted long-stroke crankshaft, 'I'-beam con-rods; lightened and balanced flywheel with heavy-duty clutch plate and a high-performance camshaft and followers. The engine breathes via twin carburettors and drives via an up-rated gearbox incorporating side pressure plates.
The engine looks to be in good health and if the quality of the rest of car is to be believed then the visual condition of the engine would indicate that the engine is in prime health.
To confirm this assumption, the owner reports the car to be in good condition mechanically and with the mileage completed since the build completion we’d imagine that the car has had enough of a shakedown for any issues that may have arisen to be ironed out.
The owner reports the car to drive very smoothly with plenty of power, it also benefits from front disc brakes, and an upgraded transmission.
Robert Lindsay himself comments on the car 'It was great to be recently reacquainted with a car I constructed in 2003. It has clearly been well looked after by subsequent owners and has benefitted from subtle upgrades such as front disc brake conversion, upgraded engine and transmission and a very useful luggage box in the rear. As well as giving the car a full service, we also fitted a bespoke tonneau cover in deep red to match the interior. Although a low mileage vehicle for the year it drives smoothly with plenty of go and is in remarkable condition overall. It was a pleasure to work on the car again and I would be happy to look after it in the future’.
