Offered as an upmarket offshoot of the Volkswagen Beetle, the Karmann Ghia added Italian-penned coachbuilt bodywork to the VW Type 1 floor pan. It was a clever idea: a car with Porsche looks and Volkswagen running costs.
The cabriolet variant especially commands a devoted following, offering the same graceful silhouette as the coupé with the added reward of open-air motoring.
This 1971 example has been comprehensively built to the owner's specification by The Karmann Ghia Company, a recognised specialist based in Forest Green, London. At its heart sits a rebuilt 1.6-litre twin-port engine, purpose-built for the car, mated to a four-speed gearbox that the vendor describes as a treat to use. The interior has been freshly trimmed in Moroccan Sand, and the folding roof is new. Outside, the car wears Dolphin Blue, widely regarded as one of the most flattering colours in the Ghia palette, set off by American Classic white-sidewall tyres on wide-rim wheels.
Having covered only modest distances since completion, the car has reportedly received recent mechanical attention across all areas. A tachometer has been specified in place of the original clock, and a working radio is fitted.
