The Background
This stunning air cooled Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia, officially known as the Camper, was first introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen, and the T2 was the second car model deriving from the first, the Type 1 (Beetle). The general idea behind the first VW Bus was to mate the late 1940's 1100 cc, air-cooled, engine and transaxle unit from the VW Type 1 Beetle into a lightweight truck.
Except for the rear-mount engine and transaxle, the Type 2 was originally designed from a blank sheet of paper. Volkswagen took the extra step of welding a ladder frame chassis to a van or truck body shell that made for a payload capacity of three quarters of a metric ton.

The History
This stunning 1971 VW T2 Westfalia Camper will celebrate its 50th, having just had a comprehensive and high-quality refurbishment. This beautiful van was originally imported from America as a project vehicle, and on arrival to the UK, it was registered on the road in 2017, when the current owner soon began the process of restoring and modifying the van, in other words, a “restomod”.
This process encompassed everything from a new paint job, to restoring its engine to keep up with today's traffic. The current owner has tried to keep as much of the original van as possible in order to retain its authenticity whilst embracing a new and stylish programme of improvements to this beautiful camper. Sadly, the current owners have to let this van go to fund their personal obligations.

The Paperwork
With this vehicle spending the early part of its life in the America, you can imagine that there isn’t much documentation. When the van arrived in the UK, is when the documentation started to appear.
The owner possesses all the MOT documents and recently renewed it in August 2021, which means it is valid until 2022, and is of course tax exempt. Other original paperwork includes all the invoices of the restoration work done to both the interior and exterior of the vehicle. You won’t find such an appreciative automobile owner who values his vehicle.

The Interior
Like the rest of the camper the interior got an overhaul during the restoration process, including a new fridge, hob, sink, and roof fabric. Additionally, it’s had a new steering wheel, seats and covers, along with new carpeting, all in pristine condition. The new buyer willl definitely enjoy the benefits of a completely new home on wheels.
The Exterior
During the restoration the truck was resprayed with period correct Canary Yellow. This Westfalia runs on replica Porsche alloy wheels and are in pristine condition. Although technically a 1971 version, the current owner has restored all exterior parts that makes it look completely brand new.
The Mechanics
Mechanics wise, the engine has been completely restored and is mechanically sound, all operating correctly. All its electricals have been refurbished, and it’s had new lights installed. The van comes with 2 ignition keys.
Speaking of top speed, this Westfalia has a 1600cc engine, and VW quotes 68 mph. These vans tend to run hot, so it will run all day at 70 mph, on a 32-degree day, just as well as it would on a day with a temperature of 60-degrees Fahrenheit.
The Appeal
The current owners have named the vehicle - Gerty, she “drives like a dream and a pure joy to take out”. A true head turner, this camper has been brought up to an excellent standard of visuals and mechanics. It is a great example of a popular van that has an interesting past, something that you won’t find again anytime soon.
As you can probably tell this VW speaks for itself. With such calibre of work completed there is no surprise that its new owner would be driving away a completely refitted van to enjoy for many years to come. Available to purchase alongside the van is a brand-new awning, hook-up cable, gas canister, plus other bits and bobs, allowing you to drive her away straight onto a campsite.
