The Appeal

GTV or ‘Gran Turismo Veloces’ is the holy grail of acronyms for Alfa enthusiasts, representing the most performance-oriented cars within the Alfa Romeo range, marketed to - and largely bought by - those with a distinct interest in performance and exhilarating driving experiences.
Of those GTV cars, the 2000 - as seen here - was developed from the 1750 GTV, with enlarged displacement courtesy of the change in bore and stroke to 84 x 88.5mm. US-market cars featured SPICA fuel injection, whilst the rest of the world retained a carburettor-fed engine, though both engines officially produced the same output of 130bhp at 5,000rpm.
This particular example was registered during the second year of 2000 GTV production in 1972, and was purchased by the vendor’s late father in 1980. The car was used and enjoyed as intended, and then passed down to the current owner after his father passed in 1994, and has been dry-stored since, with a major refurbishment in 2008 and exceedingly limited use since.
With fantastic patina and little use since its aforementioned overhaul, this is a tantalising project for anyone looking to take on a GTV and make it their own.

History/Paperwork

  • V5 registered keepers document, showing 6 former keepers
  • With the same family since 1980
  • Originally Beige in colour, the car was re-sprayed in around 1983
  • Dry stored since 1994
  • Previously overhauled by BenAlfa Cars in Westbury in 2008, along with an MoT being carried out at 70,783 miles, with the following replaced/overhauled: Brake master cylinder, brake callipers x4, discs, brake fluid, handbrake shoes, 2x brake servo units, clutch and master cylinder, carburettor mounts, engine mounts, gearbox mount, wiper motor, new front wheel bearings, rear suspension bushes, top axle bush, prop shaft universal joint, Flexi-hoses, gear lever boot, washer bottle (with electric pump) overhauled starter motor, new tyres, 2x lower ball joints, oil and filter change, new exhaust system, new plugs/points and a tune-up.
  • Following the above work, the car was used sparingly for a year amassing 134 miles, and has been laid-up in a dry garage since, being regularly started and warmed-through until around two years ago, when the battery died.
  • Numerous old MoT certificates to authenticate the indicated mileage
  • Several invoices for miscellaneous work over the years

The Interior

  • Very good condition for its age and mileage
  • Seats generally in good order, with some rips visible to the driver’s seat
  • Fabulous patina on the various chrome details and touch-points
  • The vendor states that the gauges and switches all work correctly, with no known faults
  • Up above, the headliner shows signs of ageing but is taut throughout
  • The high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel and shifter wear a commensurate usage patina, but still present well
  • In the boot, the original Ivory colour can be seen, and the spare wheel is present-and-correct

The Exterior

  • Originally Ivory, the car was resprayed in the early 1980s
  • Outstanding natural patina
  • A few bubbles of rust visible around the rear window, lower edge of the windscreen, lower edge of the OSF window, and the OSR wing on the upper edge
  • The paintwork is heavily worn, with large chips, micro-blistering, crazing, fading and lyme patches all visible, which have been documented in the gallery below
  • The various chrome details, trims and badges are all present-and-correct, and are commensurately worn and faded
  • There is a small dent in the NSR wing
  • The driver’s door catch requires adjustment, as does the bonnet catch
  • All four wheels are worn in keeping with the overall condition of the car, but hold air and are useable as they sit. The tyres were changed in 2008 and have seen limited use since

The Mechanicals

  • 2.0-litre twin-cam inline-four engine
  • There are not any known mechanical faults, but the car has not been started/run for two years following battery failure
  • The vendor suggests that the braking system will need another overhaul due to its time spent sat since its previous work in 2008.
  • Underneath, the chassis “looks to be in very good order” and we’ve included a number of underside photographs in the gallery below

Summary

In long-term, enthusiastic family ownership since 1980 and dry-stored, this is an opportunity to obtain a rare and desirable 2000 GTV which is ready to bring back to life, either as a full concours restoration, sympathetic restoration retaining the wonderful patina, or somewhere in-between.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
