1972 Ducati Desmo 450

Highlights

  • Only 147 kilometres displayed on the odometer
  • Desirable GP front forks fitted
  • One of Taglioni’s last and most accomplished roadgoing Desmodromic singles
  • Real head turner

The Appeal

By the time this motorcycle left the factory in 1972, Ducati had been building and refining their Desmodromic singles for 22 years. Many enthusiasts are of the opinion that the early ‘70s 450 Desmos are the finest around, and this 1972 bike is a particularly good example.
With a mere 147 kilometres displayed on the odometer, this Ducati is beautifully presented and the vendor points out that it features the eminently desirable GP front forks. Resplendent in its yellow paintwork and glistening brightwork, this bike is sure to attract attention wherever it goes.

The History and Paperwork

  • Accompanied by its Italian Revision paperwork
  • 147 kilometres displayed on the odometer
  • Ownership documentation present

The Condition

  • Very well presented with no signs of damage or wear we could see
  • Seemingly very original, resplendent in its factory-correct yellow colour
  • No corrosion to the frame, brightwork or engine casings
Commensurate with the exceedingly low indicated mileage, this Ducati looks to be in fabulous condition and it clearly hasn’t lived a hard life. The yellow paintwork presents exceedingly well, as do the decals which appear free from any peeling or damage. The contrasting black frame also holds a good shine and we understand that it is free from damage and corrosion.
The seat looks to have been barely sat upon and the same lack of wear is evident upon the grips, footpegs and controls. The bar and headstock bear a couple of small marks but nothing that detracts in any way from the bike’s overall appearance. The instruments are in great shape and we understand that they function as they should.
Beneath that smart yellow paintwork, the tank and mudguards appear free from corrosion or damage and there’s no evidence that this bike has ever been dropped in the past. The brightwork is free from pitting, as are the engine casings and the vendor points out the GP forks. The wheels look to be in great shape, as are the brake drums and the tyres look to be in good order.

The Mechanics

  • 450cc single cylinder ‘Desmo’ engine
  • Starts, runs and rides exceedingly well
  • Everything works as it should

Fabio Taglioni’s brilliant Desmodromic valve technology enabled Ducati’s singles to really punch above their weight when it came to performance both on road and racetrack. The vendor informs us that this bike starts, runs and rides impeccably with no issues to report.

The 450cc single cylinder engine is comparatively small by modern standards but provides ample performance, all the while ensuring the bike was as light and therefore agile as possible. We understand that all the controls function exactly as they should and that this bike is a joy to ride.

Summary

If you’re looking for a really fine example of Taglioni’s Desmo, then this 1972 450 would be a great bike to add to your collection. Presented in fantastic condition, it would make a fabulous display piece that you could also take out and enjoy on the open road.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
