1972 Fiat 500 Cabriolet

Highlights

• Subject to a highly professional conversion by Supern of Germany
• Featuring a host of endearing details
• A fully rebuilt 695cc engine making this a most useable Fiat 500

The Background

The Fiat 500, much like the Mini and Beetle, is an icon of the drive toward mass mobilisation after World War Two and, as such, needs little introduction. The little 3-meter-long car underwent many revisions over the years, however.

By the time this car left the factory in 1976 the little 500 was in its ultimate state of development with it being sold alongside its successor, the Fiat 126.

The History

This appealing little Cabriolet appears to be based on the 500L or Lusso model which was visually differentiated from its predecessors by the tubular bumper guards and the redesigned Fiat badge on the nose.

This car, however, has been subject to a full and fastidious conversion and restoration process by specialists, Supern of Germany. Supern not only converted the car to a convertible but also undertook a major mechanical restoration of the car to ensure the new owner will enjoy a highly useable Fiat 500.

The car has been owned by the current keeper since April 2021 and is now ready for a lucky new owner to cherish and enjoy.

The Paperwork

As you will see from our photographic package the Fiat 500 comes with a good level of paperwork. This includes the UK V5 as well as significant amount of paperwork relating to the export from the Netherlands and the import to the UK.
There are also some interesting other items such as some photographs from the engine rebuild, numerous MOTs and invoices and some user instructions detailing the best way to use and operate the car. Our photographs present a sample of the paperwork included with the car.

The Interior

Appropriately, the interior is no less eye catching and individual than the bright yellow exterior. It is hard not to be beaming widely when in and around this little cabriolet.
The seats are dressed in a practical black vinyl, ideal for a convertible car, and appear to be in pristine condition with no obvious areas of ripping or significant wear. The carpets are a bright red and protected by black over-mats with yellow piping. The door cards are black vinyl with striking red accents. Both carpets and door cards are in excellent condition also.

The interior has been enhanced and differentiated with the addition of a chunky sports steering wheel and alloy adornments to the pedals and gear lever. Abarth Scorpion logos adorn the door cards and dash to remind you of the sporting heritage of these little Fiats.
A modern Sony head unit and under dash speakers are fitted to allow you to hear and enjoy your music whilst cruising around, even with the hood down.

The Exterior

The bright yellow exterior of the 500 Cabriolet appears to be in excellent condition. No dents, dings or areas of rust are apparent. The sill seams suggest the car has undergone a quite recent and highly professional respray.

The details abound here too. From the white wall tyres to the rear mounted luggage rack and obligatory picnic basket, this little car is a veritable feast for the eyes. The eagle eyed will notice the brass bluebottle seemingly buzzing around the picnic and the Abarth embossed alloy sump peeking from below the sports exhaust system.

The black fabric hood features a large and uncracked rear window and provides protection for those occasional summer showers.

The Mechanics

Supern undertook a major mechanical upgrade of the car at the time of the cabriolet conversion. The extensive schedule of works included new pistons, sports camshaft, electronic ignition and reinforced driveshafts. A throaty, free-flowing sports exhaust has also been fitted. Both head and sump are embossed with Abarth branding and tying in nicely with the Abarth references in the cabin.

The mechanical enhancements also extend to a disk brake conversion to ensure this 500 stops as well as it goes……which is very well by all accounts.

The Appeal

If the appeal of this unique Fiat 500 isn’t immediately obvious, it may be time for a check-up! Fiat 500’s of this vintage are already amongst the most endearing and sought-after modern classics today. This one takes that appeal and lights a fire under it.

The “impossible to ignore” looks of the exterior and interior puts many an Italian supercar to shame. The ability to drop that hood, turn up the powerful stereo and live the dolce vita is almost irresistible.

Add to that the new owner will enjoy a very professionally converted and restored car to ensure they will get the maximum of benefit from the unique charms of this car.

If ever there was a motorised epitome of the joys of Italy on a warm summer’s day, then this must be it, surely?

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
