The Appeal
The Sport Roof Mustang wasn’t designed with practicality in mind. The rear window is practically horizontal and not really designed with visibility in mind. Instead, the goal was sidewalk impact, and looking at this well-kept ‘72, you have to concur with Ford’s priorities. It looks fantastic.
The '71-onwards first-generation cars gained three inches of width, making them more imposing and more spacious inside. Soon after arriving in the UK in the late '90s, the car underwent a comprehensive restoration, including a switch to the red paintwork you see in the photos. The work was completed to such a high standard that in the early '00s the car nabbed a series of show trophies, including Best in Show at a Street Machine event in 2003. Despite being over 20 years old, it remains in extremely good order, with few signs of age inside or out.
It is a nicely detailed car with 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels, shod with BF Goodrich tyres, and a period radio. It left the factory with the 5L 302CI 200bhp V8 and ‘Cruise-o-matic’ gearbox, but now matches that big motor to a five-speed manual box. The original factory specification sheet provided with the car also shows it is fitted with high-back seats and power steering.
The large history file covers the earlier restoration as well as extensive further work in the mid 2010s. It has been used sparingly in recent years and has clearly been looked after.
