The Appeal

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, American sports car fans were lapping up British imports in their thousands, with models such as the Austin-Healey 3000 and Jaguar XK120/140 seeing over 75 per cent of their total production shipped Stateside.

But all that would change in 1964, when the original ‘Pony Car’ appeared. The Ford Mustang was stylish, affordable, easy to own and great to drive. It was just what American customers wanted.

It came with a wide range of engines, both six-cylinder and V8, and was sold as a coupé, a ‘notchback’ and a convertible, which is what we have here.

This one is a late version of the original mustang, with the wider front grille fitted from 1971, while the extra driving lamps in the front grille mark it out as a 1973 model year car, built from 1972 onwards. It has Ford’s venerable ‘FE’ V8 engine, seen here in 302Ci (or 5.0-litre) form, with a three-speed auto transmission.

The vendor acquired the car a few years ago after spotting it for sale by the roadside in Norfolk. He used it for a few years as a scruffy but solid runner, then between 2020 and 2022 set about getting it comprehensively restored as a Lockdown project. Over £30,000 later after the attentions of a highly respected Mustang specialist here it is, a remarkable fully-restored example in superb overall condition – for sale because the vendor is downsizing his collection to focus on other projects.

  • Comprehensive documentation relating to parts and labour costs of the cars restoration in 2021-22 with most of the work completed by the Mustang Workshop in Hampshire

The Condition

  • Restored in original Ford Blue
  • Paint in superb condition throughout with no damage or corrosion
  • Chassis appears solid with no apparent rust areas – treated and undersealed during restoration with welding carried out where required
  • Superb chrome, trim and original badges
  • Gorgeous period chrome Cragar alloy wheels with new Cooper Cobra tyres all-round
  • Stunning blue leatherette upholstery, seats in superb order
  • Spotless carpets and door cards
  • Power-folding roof
  • Original push-button AM/FM stereo
  • Glass panel included for rear screen should new owner wish to fit it

The vendor enjoyed the Mustang for a decade before taking it off the road to be restored, and he reports that it was always a good runner and was very solid all over before it was taken off the road. But that didn’t stop him treating the car to an open chequebook restoration at the Mustang Workshop, which went over every inch of the car on top and underneath during its rebuild.

It received some minor underbody welding and new panels where needed, a brand-new power-electric soft-top and a stunning set of period Cragar alloy wheels, as well as a fantastic respray in the original Ford Blue.

It’s presented in fabulous condition. The bodywork is near flawless and the interior is equally as good, trimmed to the owner’s tastes in two-tone blue and white diamond-weave leather with contrasting carpets and door cards.

The Mechanics

  • 5.0-litre V8
  • Three-speed automatic
  • Starts and runs beautifully and sounds fantastic
  • New diff
  • Suspension completely overhauled
  • New sports exhaust system
  • Disc brakes – brake system completely renewed

Under the bonnet you’ll find Ford’s familiar 302Ci ‘FE’ V8, which sounds incredible, barking into life before settling into a smooth and steady idle. It’s a great engine – and both it and the automatic transmission were fully overhauled during the car’s restoration.

The same applies to the running gear – each braking, suspension or steering component was stripped and either replaced, reconditioned or overhauled during the car’s rebuild. It truly does want for nothing.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
