The Appeal
We love the MG BGT here at Car & Classic. But we share the frustration of many owners: why didn’t Abingdon develop it and exploit its fundamental brilliance?
Fortunately an army of enthusiastic specialists and owners have completed what MG began. Like this car. Where some BGTs go on a heavily modified mechanical direction, the current keeper of this car has concentrated on light running gear changes whilst heavily modifying the aesthetics.
The car was restored in 2016 and we think the seller has overseen a very tasteful project. It is now finished in specially mixed dark grey metallic following a bare metal respray and with a bespoke retrimmed cabin in red with carbon elements. Thanks to very sparing use it remains in superb condition.
Beneath the bonnet is a fully rebuilt 1.8L engine with an upgrade to Weber carburettors and CSI electronic ignition. Much of the under-bonnet work has focused on making this car drive and handle better than a factory B. The suspension has been polybushed, the rear springs are Moss’ parabolic units and the car is fitted with Gaz Pro adjustable coilovers.
The car has covered very few miles since its completion. Here is a chance to buy a stylish, bespoke BGT where someone else has invested all the time, money and energy. It comes to market with a large quantity of useful spares.
The vendor says:
“It’s a dream to drive and gets a lot of looks and people wanting to look around it. You will get strong arms as this doesn't have power steering.
“I love the colour combination, I know there isn’t one out there as I mixed the paint with the paint shop. The combination of grey on red in my opinion the best.”
